I suppose it depends on how neatly the kick is designed/finished. A kick is only an extension of the tang, so if the tang is left sufficiently wide so as to keep the blade edge from touching the inside of the handle, there is no true kick. This makes for a neater, more elegant appearing blade. The pointed shape of the kick makes for less metal to be removed when fitting the blade to the handles (my theory). To adress the original question, I believe one custom maker (I forget who) used a screw inside the handle to act as a kick/blade stop. The Bear bali I have, has an extended tang which keeps the blade from touching. Are you sure yours doesn't too?
