Kicking ass in the backwoods...

Good luck with it! I've read some very interesting stuff about similar setups, but I am no where near permanently settled enough to take that kind of a plunge.

Good luck with your dream. Many people would love to do what you're doing. And thanks for the pictures.

Derek, you have to unsettle yourself to take the plunge anyways so it sounds like you are just about ready. You can spend your whole life getting ready. I say jump, see what happens. The worst thing that could happen is that you fail, maybe die. Haha!

Dang, this is pretty stinking cool!

The best of luck to you and yours. Keep us updated as much as possible, this is extraordinarily interesting to follow.

That's really awesome guys! To be able to do all this while socializing and teaching your two children is awfully impressive. Best of luck to you guys!

We'll keep you all posted. We are currently on the road to borrow a Bobcat that we'll be using for a few month. It's going to help make a pond, make three terraces, put in a road, level out some building sites. Also, nearly done with a hand-stiched leather sheath for the BK5. Will post photos...

We're back from our trip and have been at it with the Bobcat for about a day and a half. It's amazing what you can get done with a skid steer loader with a little bit of time to adjust. So far, we've put in a good bit of the road we intend on completing. It's about 100 yards long so far and probably has another 50 yards to go. There some more finish work that needs to be completed on the first 100 yards to include some more leveling and gravel. Good thing we have a free gravel source.

Just figured I'd mention it but I am working on a leather sheath for the BK5 in my spare time. I'd have had it completed but I decided on three layers of 8 oz leather on the cutting edge portion and I am hand-stitching it. What can I say? I like atomic bomb-proof sheaths. Haha! Anyways, the stitching was so tight that I broke three needles (should have punched bigger holes) and had to get some more needles. I'll probably have it finished tomorrow night and will post pictures. Here's a teaser. There's a lot more to do still, obviously.

Looks good! Did you glue it all together before you drilled your holes? That might cut down on breaking needles. I used to break at least one a sheath, but now one will last me a really long time. Either way it looks like a good sheath.

Thanks, Psyop. Yeah, I dyed it, glued it, and then drilled the holes. I think I need to use a slightly larger bit though. I just want the stitching super tight if you know what I mean. I decided I'm going to go over it again with a bit one size bigger and go from there.
