well my boss has a son and he wanted to make a knife. it would be his first and he is 19. so i took him under my wing and guided him through. after a little less then 2 months this is what he got. i stood by his side and helped when needed but overall he did a great job. here is a picture. it was taken with my phone.

blade is 5160 @ 58 RC
Guard is brass and butt is pure nickle. talk about hard to work with. he broke 2 drills and 3 taps just taping it.

That's a great looking first knife. It was very nice of you to pass down the knowledge & take him under your wing.

You meant drill BITS right?....not drills hopefully.

ya i ment bits. we use a large knee mill to drill so control is great. but nickle is a pain in the butt.

Why not two pieces of brass or two of nickel? Just curious. Great looking first knife for him. Also, your phone camera is nicer than my digital camera I think. :o

Nice job he did.:thumbup::thumbup:
Listen, I know I am a Big Turkey and I image that is the reason I have all these Lil Turkeys under my wings.:jerkit::eek::D One of them has been hanging around here for 8 months and hasn't finished one.:jerkit::jerkit:
HEHEHEHEHE!!!

Well after he got done drilling and taping the butt he was like im doing the guard out of brass :) i thought it was funny. He was not even able to get through the but with a drill an had the hole cut with the wire edm. Then it took him like an hr to tap it. He was not looking forward to filing out the tang slot. Plus he liked the look. IG i might need to dig up a map to your shop just in case i feel like wanting turky sandwich.

Come on down and we can shoot and cook up a few of the Lil Turkey's. HEHEHEHEHE!!! Maybe we could soak them in my Ht'g relish first.;)

your a good man and thats a hell of a start into knife making
little more time at the grinder and looks like a star is being born

JT keep up the good work and to your worker
keep on going the only thing slowing you down is you

jt, thats a nice knife he made, you taught him well. its fun to teach someone to make a knife who has never done it before. a friends son who is about 8 had been making wood knives in his dads shop. when his dad gets caught up on some work he has to do i'm going to get him started on making a real knife.

I'd rather teach a kid how to make a knife than ANYTHING else I can think of! It's a tool that they can actually use, a project and experience they'll NEVER forget, and through the experience, you'll make a friend that will last forever. 20-30-40 years from now he'll remember you for this. Great job!

If you are talking about the lite gal in the pic than 8 months is not near enough time George. Needs time to learn stacking (billetts)

He started out filing a flat grind and was doing good. I mean it was messy but that would clean up. Then his dad got ahold of it and put it on the mill and milled in a hallow grind. Which is fine but it left little cups from the end milk. He wanted to keep them but i explaned how cutting would be affected. I them cleaned up the grind for him on my 8 inch contact wheel. It is a very solid knife and will never let him down

That looks great, the nickel goes with the wood really well, the handle shape is very nice and the seams looks tight.

I don't know why but I like the look of the different bolster materials on that knife.

Does anyone else find it attractive from a design perspective or am I just the odd duck???
