Holy crap! I just woke up the other day with an excruciating/exploding pain in my side and ended up getting admitted to the hospital to have a kidney stone surgically removed. I passed the stones while I was in pre-op; so I avoided surgery (thank goodness.) But I had no idea that I could experience that much pain. WOW! If I never go through that again it will be too soon.

Unbeleivable. Wooo! I'm only 35. Though they informaed me that they had an 18 year old in who passed over the course of a few visits, twenty something stones. Sucks to be him is all I could think.

My father was a Urologist, the type of doctor that would have removed your stone. He told me once that, he believed that kidney stones produce the most extreme pain a person can endure. Many people pass out from the pain. Glad yours is over. I hope I never have to experience it myself.

You have my sympathy. I've had two stones over the years and the pain was excrutiating. As Ookpik said, drink lots of water and you may avoid another stone.

everytime that dad gets one I make him some catnip tea and it kills the pain, even when pain killer don't work the catnip alwas seems to.

I've passed several, the closest thing to childbirth I'm told, bad news is if ya had 'em once your prone to 'em.

My father has had the lithotripsy procedure (sound waves) done many times to ultrasonically break up the stones. This makes the a _bit_ easier to pass, but still hurts when they move around...

I had one of my stones ultrasonically blasted. It didn’t even scratch it and I pissed blood for three days. As far as I know the stone’s still there. :grumpy:

I had one last January..it was the worst pain I ever had..I almost seriously considered cutting myself to have another pain that I could concentrate on...it was that bad..

I'll tell you... WHen I woke up to that pain, I'll admit that I was scared. Seriously, I've never hurt like that in my life! And it was coming from inside me. It certainly freaked me a bit. I thought something had gone dreadfully wrong with a vital organ of mine - instead just dreadfully painful.

My hospital roommate was a 73 year old guy who had just had his bladder and prostate removed due to cancer and was up and walking around 4 days after the surgery. Tough SOB. And it sure put things in perspective for me.

I have to say though, that the folks creating the pain control narcotics are earning their income. WOW. That was some good stuff. So good in fact, that I think I experienced a little bout of withdrawal after I was discharged. If I hurt like that again (along with the 103 degree fever like I had) you can bet I'll trot my pansy ass back to the hospital for more drugs till the damn thing passes. I honestly hope I never have to face that again though. Well, off to drink some more water!

I've had them twice - left kidney, right kidney. Absolutely brutal pain. It took 4 shots of demerol before the meds had any effect. I didn't know what was wrong and I thought I was gonna' die, but I really didn't care. I'm sure others know what I mean.

Drink lots of water.

Had a nasty-assed "mystery pain" that put me in the hospital for 6 hours last spring. Was in the office at 7 pm doing grunt work & suddenly it felt like I'd been stabbed in the guts w/ a snow shovel. Sweating, chalk white, etc. went to the emergency room & made a tight little golf ball out of one of those yellow kidney-shaped plastic puke/spit dishes. The Dr.'s said it could have been a stone. Couldn't find anything. Sent me home. Lots of water & cranberry juice. Don't want to do that again. Ever. Side note- my buddy Prill passed a Kidney stone on his wedding night. Bad Ju-Ju. Poor Bastard.

Oh man, brings back memories. I am glad it is over for you. Never knew I could handle that much pain until it happened. Woke up in the middle of the night and could not fathom who that grey/chaulky white bastid was in the mirror.
The first couple of days were killer as far as pain.

Yes, the pain from kidney stones is excruciating but not quite as bad as the pain I experienced from a ruptured appendix. I was in so much pain that I didn't care wheather I lived or died - I just wanted the pain to end. The ER surgeon on call told me that we needed to do an exploratory surgery to find out what the problem was. I told him that I didn't care if he had to cut my head off, just relieve the pain. At one point during his exam he asked how I felt just in general. I said that I felt like I was going to die. You should have seen his eyes light up. He told me later that when he's heard patients say that they are usually right!

It took me two days to pass my stone - pain was on and off. When I passed it I couldn't believe such a small object could cause so much pain (approx. 1/8 in. diameter jack stone.)

I remember passing one in the hotel shower in a third world country, I remember the guy at the desk telling me he'll call a doctor, Iwent back to my room, took 2 vicodin, and passed it screaming in the shower, it was better than seeing one of the local witch doctors, ever since I always travel with enough vicodin to get me through a stone passing

Yup, I've been there too. One kidney stone was enough to make me a confirmed water drinker!

BTW, I learned an important lesson, that in an ER, being stoic doesn't get you pain meds quickly. However, yelling like a banshee about the pain works rather well. ;) Drama counts!

I had several when I was younger. They hurt like a mother. Surgery a few times(soundwaves and the basket thingie. High quality narcotics and an IV drip is the only thing that stops the pain. Since I cut out soft drinks, I've had nearly no problems. Love my unsweetened iced tea.
