I was lucky enough to have kidney stones a couple of years ago. It took about two months to pass, with mostly a dull, constant pain rather than agony. But there were some bouts of complete misery where I would lock myself in an office and writhe for an hour or two. The worst part was passing it - I ran out of urine, and the friggin thing stopped halfway down my urethra. I Guzzled some water, and waited until I was able to push it the rest of the way out. It was a small, rectangular calcium stone, with little crystalline projections all over one side. Fun fun fun.
Still, as bad as that was, it paled in comparison to a string of 3 gout attacks I had earlier last year. Absolutely excruciating. One night, my wife woke up and saw that my foot was uncovered (dead of winter, drafty bedroom). Out of habit, she drapes a sheet over it, and I wake up screaming. Real sensitive to pressure.
I suppose it could be that I had a minor case of stones and a bad case of gout, but either way they made me change my diet pretty damn quick.
