I got an education on how painful kidney stones can be. In a weeks time I passed two of them, four days apart, one on each side. I hope I do not ever have to experience that again.

Walt,
The toughest guy I know (in terms of pain tolerance) said it was the most painful thing he ever went through. He then posted little notes all around his apartment saying "drink water" and "no coffee." Supposedly the only thing men experience that rivals what a woman goes through in childbirth. I'm glad you're through it and think positive that it WON'T happen again. At least to you!

I've had stones on both sides. One, about the size of a jellybean, had to be busted up with ultrasound before it could be passed. Since then, I drink about 3 quarts of water a day, or more. I'm 5'10", and that's the amount of water it takes to keep a person my size from getting concentrated urine. If you're taller, you may have to drink more.

Find a good urologist and ask him/her a lot of questions! :)

I feel for you man. I've had two kidney stones - 13 years apart, and that was too much. A woman I know went through both child birth and kidney stones. She said whoever compares it to childbirth is B.S., stones are way more painful!

Glad you passed 'em - keep drinking water!

Trust me when I say "I feel your pain". Kidney stones do put other types of pain in perspective (or at least they did for me).

I am one of those wackos whose body rejects any and all pain medication with extreme violence and prejudice so there is nothing to do but stick it out.

Passed one last week, still got one floating around. It is not so bad when it is out of your kidney and in the bladder as long as it is small, but even then you know it is there. :D.

It is an awesome feeling when they are gone. The nurse at my urologist said she had three kids and a bout of stones. She said she would rather give birth again in a heartbeat. ;).

Well, yeah, at least with a birth, you have something interesting to show for the pain.

I've been lucky, so far... Knock on wood.

I have several episodes of this, the most painful I was trainingon the Mojave desertand the I was pasing blood clouts in my urine. besides the pain there is the danger of the kidneys shuting down, one side did on me.

Man I lost my right kidney due to a kidney stone just last year and now there gonna have to take it out after 2 surgurys and 3 stents and an afrostamy tube later oh and staph infection from one of the surgurys. So i feel your pain. There taking my right kidney out in the next month or so cause its no good. All because of a kidney stone. Im sorry for you pain.

Thanks for the well wishes. The bad thing about drinking a lot of fluids, I have an enlarged prostate so that means a lot of bathroom trips. These things can also run in families. My dad passed 13 of them during his lifetime, I now have had two, so far my two sons have not had any but I have a 23 year old grandson who has passed two. I was told that drinking a lot of colas and a lot of tea can cause them also.

I have felt your pain!

One type of kidney stone is caused by excessive uric acid in the body. This can usually be prevented with the drug Allopurinol.

When I had my last stone years ago, my doctor gave me a "collection kit." I peed through a small very fine strainer that caught the stone. I put it in the bottle and it was sent to the lab for analysis.

They were able to determine that my stone was caused by excessive uric acid and I now take Allopurinol daily. I've not had a stone since.

Good luck

Dan

I've passed stones on both sides. The first time I did so I thought I was going to die. Not that I cared at the time. I remember filling out paperwork at the emergency room on my knees because I was in too much pain to stand.

The attending nurse and doctor both knew what was wrong right away when I described my symptoms as being continuously kicked in my right *groin* and stabbed with an icepick in my right kidney.

After 3 shots of Demerol I was still asking the nurse if I was supposed to start feeling some relief anytime soon. The fourth shot finally kicked in enough to send me home.

Second stone on the left side was just as brutal. At least I knew what was happening when it occurred.

Well, the stone on the right side that I thought I must have passed kicked me in the groin at 2 am Tue morning. It had stopped bothering me completley, so I thought I must have passed it while on the commode and did not know it. Back to the hospital and after several different meds and a lot of IV fluids in an attempt to flush it out, the urologist decided that I was not going to be able to pass that thing, so he went in with a scope Wed afternoon and broke it up with a laser. Feeling fine now except for the after effect of the scope. Some of you guys who have ever had a scope used will know what I am referring to.

Uh huh ...
Here was my reaction. "Doc, let me get this straight, exactly what are you going to to with that thing?"

Answer "bla, bla, bla".

Me ":eek::eek::eek::eek::eek::eek:".

Thanks, I'm cringing at my computer right now. It physically hurts me to think about a scope procedure like that. I'm glad my stones came out the old fashioned way. For my first stone, they gave me demerol - that's good stuff. Since I first felt the stone at 1:14 in the morning that time around (the last one was at 4:37 - not as bad), they put me in in-patient for the rest of the day. Apparently Nurse Ratchet was on the floor that day, because when she read my chart, her angry reply was "Good! Every man should have to go through this so they know what we go through to give them children!" If I wasn't flying high on demerol, I might've been a bit more worried about this nurse. She proceded to tell me about the dreaded "staghorn" stones - shaped just as you would imagine it to be, the tips of the "antlers" dig into the sides of your ureter and the thing stays there. She then described the nasty surgical procedure used to take them out.
