Kids and camping

I had a search a month ago for a 3 yr old who was missing 5 hrs playing in the back yard. Found him alive via thermal imaging 400 yards from the house on the shore of a lake. His parents missed him for 15 mins.

Keep watch and put a damn whistle and bright color clothes on your kids.

Me and may sisters were out camping with our parents when my youngest sis was 2. I've been out with my daughter who is 4 and there was no problems. Summer, good weather just went out overnight with no hiking just being in the wild is good enough. She loved it and so did I.

We took our daughter camping when she was one month old. She is 36 now and still loves camping.

My kids had their first camping trip at about 1 year old. At two years, you have a walking, talking little person enjoying what you enjoy and asking questions till he falls asleep. Believe me, he'll remeber and want some more.

Hi there all,
My two daughters, now 12 and 17, have been camping with us since they were nursing. As has been said, it is real work to safely bring the kids camping, but the rewards at seeing their faces and curiosity are precious and once in a lifetime experiences for both the kids and us. The sooner you get em used to the outdoors the sooner it really becomes more and more fun,IMO.
I wasn't a very patient dad at first, I must admit that having the great good fortune to have a loving, strong willed and patient wife helped alot...the backpack carrier was a really good idea...and as my then first daughter and I both found out, the smooth-hairy-green-caterpiller really stings painfully, always pack the sting-ez.

now-years later-the ladies have their own Itineraries when we camp...my youngest keeps detailed records of frogs, snails and birds along with game signs and trails and my oldest collects natures gifts for her art collages and holiday gifts. The coolest thing is when they got old enough to carry their own kit, we started going to the really remote, pack in places.

Trust me I know if you turn your back for 3 seconds they seem to be gone for 5 min. My little guy is quick and very curious. We are definitly going to take him on a camping trip, but not this time. Only because the wife wants to be there too and she has to work at the hospital this weekend. So now we are planning a trip probably the end of this month or the beginning of Nov. So it going to be me, wife, my dad and little man. The more eyes the better.
Skammer: I like that idea for the whistle and bright clothes. I know he can use a whistle, so I get another one just for him. I'll teach him how to use it a little better though. Thanks.
I appreciate all the post and info from you guys. When I go on the camping trip with little man I'll post some pics and let you know how it went.
Thanks again,
GEC

If you put the whistle on a string round his neck make sure it can break away. The easiest method is to split the string and attach a small piece of 10lb test fishing line between the 2 pieces.

Just came back from a weekend trip with my 7yr old and 3.5 yr, watch them around the fire and any water, and I like the whistle idea, take plenty of hot dogs and stuff for smores and start them on a journey to last generations.

My parents took us camping about as soon as we were born. I have pictures of myself in Yellowstone and Glacier at age 1 or 2.

My son't first 'camping' trip was at age 1, to a bike rally. Not much of a wilderness adventure, but he did sleep in a tent.

My brother has kids ages 7, 6, and 2. They've been on a couple of camping trips, and he and my sis-in-law said that it's the age between when they can't walk, and can walk but know not to step in the fire, at which you have to really watch out for them.

Have fun!

Yeah and with the materials kids clothes are made out of, they'd go up in a hurry if they walked into a fire.

2 is a great age to get them started, this stuff about them getting lost, yeah of course it could happen but no more so than when taking them shopping in the city etc.
Just keep an eye on them as you always would and everything will be fine. Be sure to take them plenty of spare clothes and a warm sleeping bag.
And as mentioned watch them closely around the stove or fire when cooking etc !!!
