Kids first backpacking trip

I just finished a quick 1 night backpacking trip with a few of the kids (one was home sick with mom.) It was the first backpacking over-niter for the kids. The idea was they more or less carried their gear. Jack-Jack handed me his pack after a 1/4 mile. We hiked just over two miles in to a hiker/biker campground and back out in the morning.

So breakfast question - Each kid had a single steel mug that I figured they could use for a cup for hot drinks and a bowl for oatmeal in the morning. Cleaning the oatmeal from the cups was annoying. Warm breakfast was nice for the kids - but I'm not sure the cleaning effort was worth it. Any suggestions on making the cleaning effort easier? Or should we stick to pop-tarts and cereal bars?

Bring a small plastic cereal bowl for the oatmeal

they can lick it clean

great photos!!!

I mix instant oatmeal, protein powder, and dried fruit in the new microwavable cooking bags, and eat right out of the bag. Easy to pack out an vary your daily breakfast. Just pour in boiling water and nothing to clean up.

Awesome! The first pic made me smile seeing those kids smiling carrying their packs!! Good work getting the younger generation out there.

Great to see the kids enjoying a backpacking trip!

When I have oatmeal, I find it very easy to clean up just by doing three quick swirling rinses with hot water. It works well for me. I don't add any fats like butter to the oatmeal, so simple water cleanup is fine.

Yup. That's the ticket right there. In fact, that is the way I eat the majority of my meals while backpacking

We actually just pour the water straight into the plain old Quaker oatmeal packets and it works fine as well. Need to make sure you're careful holding the bag for a few seconds until it cools down a bit though, or just wait for the water to cool a little bit.
