I think you should always remember that you are the "parent". You are the one who must make the tough calls and teach the kids those things that they need in order to grow up to be independent, responsible, and productive adults
You set the example. Give them the tools and knowledge to do this then kick them in the butt when they are old enough to leave the nest. And don't be afraid to tell them that this is why you are doing what you are doing because someday they will be out on their own and have to know this.
Help them overcome their problems to a limit. It is better if they figure out the solution. Don't get them involved in your problems, they are too young and emotional to handle difficult adult issues. Some things are best left discussed only by the parents.
Don't buy their affection. They know what is important from a parent and what is frivolous.
But you must set the example for them to follow. They don't miss much and can spots fakes a mile away.
