For Christmas I will be getting a Kifaru E&E pack. This will be for day-hiking, day-hunting, and 10 essentials in the truck bag. I was wondering what you guys think would be a good ultralight shelter to put in it. I am thinking a poncho and a thermolite bivy from AMK. Can make tarp or wear poncho. I am concerned about the bivy. In S.E.R.E. school a buddy and I used two emergency blankets one up and one down. We were soaking wet in the early morning. It worked too well. We then got chills from being wet.

I just got one of the bivys. Has a vent in the foot area. Looks pretty cool, I havent tried it out yet though. I was wanting to use it ove rmy mountaineering knee sack in the hammock.

Hi folks,
I brought the AMK Bivy bag with me last month into Algonquin Provincial Park here in Ontario as a backup. I ended up using it inside my sleeping bag on one particularly cold night and it was terrific. Made a big difference. The material - while not the sturdiest in the world - held up very well. The velcro attachments holding the fold together stayed shut. These also allow for condensation to evaporate.
On the other nights, I simply opened up the folded edge, and wrapped up my trusty beagle who slept next to me on a foam mattress. He seemed perfectly content.
Bottom line, I recommend it totally, and would suggest everyone carry one in the car trunk for emergencies etc..., as it is so light and small.
Cheers,
Mungo

Thanks guys. That is good to hear about the breathability. Has anyone tried a Kifaru Woobie?

I have a woobie that Angie at Kifaru just rushed out to me. I'll be using it in some cold adirondack weather with and without a supplemental sleeping bag. I'm going to see how well it will insulate in that kind of weather. I've had it for about a week or so and just using it as a comforter on my bed I can tell it will be sufficient to at least 40 degrees or so. Then again, everyone is different and my 40 degree warmth may be too cool for others. Between the woobie and the Integral Designs Poncho Liner, I went with American Made and Kifaru design. High cost but well worth it for the compressability and light weight.

As for a good shelter for your E&E pack, get yourself one of the emergency bivy sacks that is thermolite by AMK. It is not too bulky and it will work great to trap heat. Just stay dry and you'll be happy.

Sorry, I won't pay five times the price just to get a "Kifaru" tag on anything.

Estela, I hope you are getting a discount for being in the biz.
