I ordered the knife four days ago and it arrived today. That's a pretty quick trip from Japan!
It's the Genbu model. It has Kiku’s famous multi ground 7 inch blade with recurved hollow ground belly and reinforced Hamaguri-ba grind tip and false edge on the back, with black contoured G-10 handle with finger hole and thumb notches on the blade tang.
I don't know what discussion there has been about the finger hole; but I can say it brings a new dimension to knife retention. At first, using the finger hole felt a little strange with the first joint of my forefinger protruding through the knife. Then it dawned on me: If I am in a serious confrontation, I'm not going to drop this knife, nor will I cut myself with it from losing my grip.
The kife balances at the finger hole. Wrist snaps are impressive, using the hole as a fulcrum point. It also works well in reverse grip; in this case, the little finger goes through the finger hole.
I have owned many custom knives. The fit and finish on the Genbu rivals the finest I have seen. It also receives high marks in the wow factor with the beautiful grind lines and the acid etch on the OU31 steel. It is also the absolute sharpest knife I have ever handled bar none. It is savagely sharp (hows that?); which is way above hair popping sharp.
I've read that a human hair can measure about 20 microns and that a blade can be honed to 1 micron.
