Has anyone used the Kombat Instruments Limited padded sticks. If so, how durable are they and how well do they function in sparring?

Many thanks,

I don't remember seeing those on the website-
haven't been checking it lately...are they rattan like his normal KIL sticks? If that's the case, don't worry, they're awesome. I've used his sticks and really gave them a beating (these were 1 1/4" thick), so if that's what is under the padding I'd recommend it....remember, the guy (Nick) is a full-blooded Dog Brothers member and won't sell a stick that he wouldn't use himself in a nasty "meeting." (At least that's how he was advertising a few years ago)...

I like the Actionflex sticks. To spar, you need goggles and would be best off with a light helmet (which they also sell). They have a great guarantee on their products and are a pleasure to deal with. Their site is www.actionflex.com. If you are an instructor, ask about discounts for instructors.

I have used their 28 and 31 inch pro-series Eskrima sticks and like them. These are one type of training sticks that Guro Dan Inosanto uses. I have also used the 40 inch two-handed sword, the six foot Yari/Naginata, and the nunchakus (which we now call "articulated foam training sticks" for legal reasons). I have not used the helmets yet. Aside from a few minor surface bruises bestowed on me by the guys who are younger, faster, and more talented, we have had no injuries from use of the Actionflex products.

Give them a call at 1-800-748-4084.

Thanks!

Yeah, I really love my rattan KIL sticks. I use them for drills and for full-contact sparring, and they absolutely shred everyone else's sticks. I've had a pair for the better part of a year and they are still going strong (though the rind has started to crack a bit). Check out the KIL padded sticks at http://www.bloodsport.com/product.htm (bottom of page by training knives).

Thanks for the recommendation. I have seen the Actionflex sticks advertised for some time, but was waiting to hear a professional opinion about them before I invested in them. I hope they'll give me an instructor's discount, since they don't come cheap (less money for me to spend on knives!). If you are looking for a good helmet for padded stick sparring, I'd recommend the Macho MVP headgear with facecage. It is the headgear that we use for all of our empty-hand and padded-weapons sparring (obviously no good for rattan sticks, though).

KIL's padded sticks are made from thin, but heavy rattan, lightly padded with some sort of foam and wrapped with tape. You WILL feel these sticks during sparring. They will leave bumps and bruises. After a while the padding gets compressed, so you might have to purchase some more foam to rewrap them. Padded sticks will not last forever. The padding always gets ripped up during sparring. Having a roll of duct tape or gaffer's tape helps prolong the life of padded sticks(and regular sticks too).

I just checked out the KIL website. It looks like they've changed the design of their padded sticks. They used to be bright red without that grip portion that's on the website...
