I have a pack rat loose in the house. They don't follow the standard mouse/rat control protocol. They can eat bait from traps without springing them, they drag away glue traps and poison to their fetid vermin lair.

The bugger can be heard gnawing loudly at all hours of the day.

So I'm looking for a proven method that is guaranteed to eliminate the sucker. Everyone gets to post a method. The winning solution that delivers the rats head will receive a prize to be determined.

FIRE! Just kidding :D:p I say pellet rifle (maybe .22 but not needed) orFigure four, this is a wilderness forum by the way! :)

Blowgun!! If that don't work put a large glue trap baited with a shell peanut in a paper bag laying on it's side. The bag helps them get extra stuck in the trap and not crawl off.

Figure 4, with peanut butter on the trigger.

And keep him away from the leather!

Slightly more labor intensive than a cat, get yourself a good pellet rifle.

You mean less labor intensive.

Cats eat and shit like crazy, lot of work there.

Plus if youre like me, and already spend all night sitting around drinking you may as well do it in the kitchen with a pellet gun at the ready. 2 birds with 1 stone.

We had mice this spring, first thing we did was reorganize all the cupboards, put any mice accessible foods into jars (any package that could be gnawed through got put into containers), and surprisingly they disappeared before we had to take any proactive measures. I couldnt believe it, cause I thought they horded lots of food, guess these ones werent as smart. Though one floor level cupboard stinks like there's dead mice under it...

Get a coffee can or five gallon bucket (depending on size of rat.) Cut a flap in the lid, but leave the hinge part intact. Balance the bucket on it's side on a platform high enough so that the bucket will stand upright when it tips over. Build a ramp up to the bucket. Bait the bottom of the bucket. The idea is that the critter goes up the ramp and in the bucket, which then tips over, trapping the rat inside. I'm not sure of the best way to get a pissed off rat out of a bucket, though. This did work once with a mouse and a coffee can.

Get a badger and sic it on the pack rat!
(You know what a badger looks like?)

One caveat is that the house must remain standing

Dude, get a cat!

Andy

Neighbors cat is a prolific squirrel hunter. She has yet to produce the pack rat.

It's in the sub floor of the house...I've never seen it.

Glue the glue trap to the floor.

Andy

They are too smart for most traps.

Blowgun!! If that don't work put a large glue trap baited with a shell peanut in a paper bag laying on it's side. The bag helps them get extra stuck in the trap and not crawl off.

Right now I have my blowgun in a vent in my room. The end of the blowgun is loaded with peanut butter. If he tries to eat it I'm gonna pop him.

That sounds good. The other thing I have tried is a bucket half full of water with a piece of corner molding balancing on it. It is baited with PB. When they walk on the molding it drops them into the bucket.

Shotgun

Ok, actually, I would try a drowning trap- a large bucket half filled with water or antifreeze, and a tilting piece of wood with bait- it runs out to get the bait, and then it cannot touch bottom or climb out. If you are lucky, you can kill them all.

edit: oops posts crossed

they always travel along walls so set the trap there, and try something firmer then peanut butter for the trap so it won't lick off the PB.

Mikeals idea is pretty good, maybe a pvc tube, balanced on a table and bait at the end, which is closed. when he walks to the end his weight tips it and hes stuck. You would have to find a way to attach it to the table so it won't just fall flat on the floor.
