Killed my Rat II

I wouldn't know how to baton a liner lock without the lock engaged

Skip to about 2:45. I don't know if this is the best vid on the subject, but the guy's technique looked at least okay (I've never batoned a folder, myself).

I'm a big fan of the Rat 2 in terms of looks, size and shape. Love the dual thumb studs and the blade opens and closes fast and smoothly.

I have two.

If I tighten the pivot on the first one just a smidge too much, the lock fails and closes on my finger. Readjust the pivot slightly and the lock is fine.

This doesn't give me much confidence. The difference between fine and complete failure is a half turn or less of the pivot screw.

The second Rat 2 doesn't seem to have this problem.

Interesting way of making fuzz sticks ;)

What is the liner and blade thickness of the RAT2? equal of the RAT1?
My RAT1 had a blade thickness just under 3mm (0,118inch). Liners at 1,5mm (0,059inch)

My RAT 1 has 0.115" thick blade; the RAT 2 mikes out at 0.093".

Love the pic of your dog.

What I have "read" is to disengage the lock and baton with the blade LOWER than the handle.

I batoned with my Spyderco Persistence though fire wood. The fasteners were jarred loose, but the lock never failed. It has a liner lock too.

The liner of Tenacious is thicker than RAT 1 (not sure RAT 2).

Anyone interested, vininull has youtube showing how tough RAT 1 compared to Tenacious.

PS: I have Resilience and Bradley. RAT 1 was that a colleague ordered & received, not mine.

I might have to make a trip up to Smoky Mountain Knife Works and try to pick out a suitable knife. I go on holiday leave this week so I'll have plenty of time for more "experiments".

I am not surprised that the lock failed while batoning with it locked open. I've always heard to do it with the lock open. If I was going to use a liner or frame lock as a "last resort" type knife, I'd make sure to do that. Any lock can fail, some worse than others depending on what you're doing. I find the AXIS lock performs really well and gives me a little more confidence over other types. Especially when I'm putting stress on the lock in some way. Mostly I like how smooth it deploys and closes though, and that's it's so ambidextrous (I'm a lefty).

The RAT-1 is still an awesome knife. Especially for the money!
