Killing pests in PA

So do i but with a snare i worry that i will get my dog. With a crossbow i know that if i miss i'll only hit the ground. Or the shed but lets not worry about that.

If it has to go.

Live trap it, submerge the trap in water, place a brick on it. Best to go away for a while at this point. 15 or so minutes later bag the pest and toss it in the trash.

Good luck

LOL!
they freak out if you do that man!
(squirrels at least)
honeslty... I'm not saying "break the law"
but honestly, my neighbor (and I live in freaking nj!) shot a racoon right outside of his house (it was literally like 1' from his house. he messed up the siding, but it's covered with shrubbery so who cares?) witha bow and arrow. and I live in a twonhouse development! he did it at night and threw it in the trash.
Everyone was happy and no one got in trouble.
my friends (live in PA) had trouble with a skunk, so they bought some cheap live traps, caught it, and took it somehwere deep in some woods far away. (I think)
they all did this without bothering with licenses and whatnot.
I wouldn't care personnally. we kill mice, so why not groundhogs?
I say just don't get caught, or hire animal control to set some treaps for you.

I would however kill it humanley if you do... not by drowning it... thats mean.
:D

Use a 22 subsonic HP so as not to disturb the neighbors. OR get a dachshund - they were originally bred to hunt badgers .They will go into the 'chucks hole, kill the chuck and bring it out !!

The way I see it, if you catch the cat or the ground hog it is a win - win situation.:D

C'mon. Could you guys really kill something this cute? (My brother's cat)

I see nothing wrong with cats...mine serves its purpose. it kills all the squirrels and mice and moles, but not big enough for the problem groundhog mentioned most likely. It is even so kind to bring them in my bed sometimes! especially squirrel tails

Well thats a kitten, and it is cute, so no I couldn't kill it.

When it gets older thats a different story. You see, I am allergic to cats and I think those SOB's know it so they always jump on me and come close to me. I am convinced they do it to because I am allergic.

That said, I don't think I could kill someones pet cat, but if it accidentally found its way in deadfall trap.........:o

To the OP- call the desk officers of your local PD- non emergency number. Ask them about restrictions on shooting your crossbow & if the all clear is given, tell them about the groundhog. I hunted rabbits on my parents property in Roanoke CITY, Va. as a teen. There were no restriction on shooting bows(even air rifles were restricted) & the Game commission stated that there were no hunting infractions per the city location as long as game laws for that county were followed. I did not even need a license as it was my fathers property.

On killing cats... volitile topic- funny thing you hear people say "The only good cat/snake is a dead one" but when I reply that I feel the same way about dogs, they fall off their chairs!!!! I don't really feel that way- my pets consist of 2 dogs, 2 cats and 2 snakes(watch out Noah)- I just like to confront prejudice every chance I get(& watch peoples reactions to shock!!! LOL!!).

Your local "old time" hardware store has the answer. It is called a little giant gopher killer or some similar name. Plug up all the holes but one, light a few of these cartridges, put in hole, cover last hole with dirt. The billowing toxic smoke will do the job and no one will know. Use 6 cartridges to be sure. I love overkill :-) i will post more info as i find it.

Here is more info on the gopher gasser :

Atlas Giant Destroyer Gopher Gasser

The Gaint Destroyer Gopher Gasser kills gophers, moles, woodchucks, rats, skunks and ground squirrels. It has been used by farmers, towns people, on golf courses and cemetaries for years. The active ingredients are Sodium Nitrate (46.2%), Sulfur (34.8%), and Charcoal (8.7%).

The gassers do work,I've also used cyanide tablets but it always bothered me using them, you used to be able to get them at a local feedstore but I did have a restricted use pesticide license at the time,I don't remember if they were restricted or not.The thing with anything that gasses them is,you need to have all of the holes closed so they do get gassed.Somebody mentioned Dachshunds and they can be vicious little critters but PA groundhogs are a lot bigger than badgers.Another method that might work, depending on where the hole goes,I know there are people in the Downingtown area that raise Jack Russell terriers, there used to be a couple of hunt clubs in the area that had trials a few times a year,if you can find somebody with Jacks, they might be able to help you out but you would have to be able to did the dog out if they don't kill the groundhog.

These garden destroying fat bastards must be stopped.

I don't know how many my brothers, old man and I have eliminated. Usually we popped them with a .22 loaded with CB's.

Also can take em with a Benjamin Sheridan air rifle.

I got one from my second story bedroom window with my 10-22 loaded with Stingers. Pretty much overkill but I couldn't resist.

Was shooting with my brother once and a chuck popped up right behind his target. He took it out with a mini-30. Not much was left.

Here's a link to actual PA game law:

http://www.pgc.state.pa.us/pgc/cwp/view.asp?a=478&q=151056#2121

As I read it, you can legally kill the groundhog for eating your garden (section 2121) and use a variety of methods, including shooting, poison, or traps (section 2126.a.2). It sounds like you have to report to the game commission within 24 hours (section 2122)

http://www.pgc.state.pa.us/pgc/cwp/view.asp?a=478&q=151112

This section includes the "safety zones" for shooting (section 2505) - 50 yards for bow and arrow or crossbow, and 150 yards for firearms. There are some exemptions for landownders, so you may be able to shoot even if you're within 50 yards of the house.

If you want to be safe, it's pretty useless asking the forum. Call up your local fish and game person - they'll actually know the law, and will be the ones interpreting it if there's a problem or someone complains. (example - a prior post talked about trapping a raccoon and getting nailed for not having a permit. The fish and game person will be the one interpreting if the "pest" section applies to your raccoon, or if you're illegally trapping without a permit.) Here's contact info for the regional offices:
http://www.pgc.state.pa.us/pgc/cwp/view.asp?a=481&q=153205&pgcNav=|

Also, a general comment. If you do something illegal, or even questionable, don't post details to this public forum. Especially don't say "but we didn't get caught". Somebody will get a burr under their saddle and track you down. It has happened - forumite posted some bloody pictures of a pair of raccoons (legally exterminated as pests). Some folks (presumably animal rights supporters, but I don't know for sure) found out his real identity and address, and reported him. He had some delicate questions to answer. Lesson - do it clean, quiet, and legal.
