All right the kiln question first: has anyone used kao-wool(or some kind of fire blanket) for kiln building?

And the forge: what are some high temp glues that will hold fiber blanket to prices of metal(or the forge body)?

Thanks a ton!

These topics are covered in detail in the stickies at the top of this page. There's a lot of info in there, so search around.

A call or email to High Temp Tools and Refractory will answer your questions. www.hightemptools.com

On some things I have run stainless sheet metal screws through the shell and "stuck" the wool on it to hold in place. This is not commonly needed, as once the wool is rigidized, then coated with satanite and ITC-100 it will be quite rigid. Satanite itself can be used as a "cement" to hold the wool in place, as well as the tubes of refractory cement from the hardware store and refractory suppliers..

Those SS screws are a good idea. I was running wire through and that was a pain.
If you do it the way Stacy suggests here, you will have a long-lasting and hot forge. The ITC-100 is expensive, but worth it.

It worked good for the removable top on a vertical forge.

I saw where a person had welded lots of wire pieces to hold his wool and thought that "there had to be a simpler way"....and there was.
I drew two concentric circles and drilled pilot holes every 60 degrees, plus one in the center. That made a total of thirteen 1" long sheet metal screws to hold the wool. I suppose if you were anal about the screw heads showing, you could weld the screws on the inside surface....but I don't know anyone who would really care about how a forge/oven looks on the outside. The screw heads looked sort of cool t me, anyway.
