Will a piece of stainless work with the ITC coating,or do I need to get hard brick.I no that the floor needs to be for rough service.
This is because I will be putting heavy stock in and out.

Bubble alumina seems to be the coating material of choice, especially if you plan to make damascus.

Steel moves when heating and cooling and takes a lot of heat energy to get to temp. The hard bricks are tougher than you might think; I run a lot of large stock in my forges and the bricks hold up well. If your going to weld damascus in your forge the steel floor is no more resistant to borax than the brick is. Try hydrocarbon solvent instead.
I have removable mild steel floor covered with brick in my welding forge. This works well. The brick can be easily replaced when needed.
