Does anyone use a kiln for heat treat? I lucked into a pretty good size one tonight. It has a max temp of 2300 degrees.

I contacted a lady selling one last night. She told me it took 4-6 hours to reach top temp 2300* F. :eek:That's alot of time and expense.
Maybe the one your looking at ramps up faster. You might ask them though

I bought one for a $100 and have used it for a while. I cut a hole in the lid and dropped the blades in on a wire and covered with a fire brick. It works fine but is very slow. About an hour to reach 1500. I wait till it is about 1450 then stick in blades, It had no pyrometer or controls, just switches. I added a controller and pyrometer. I am going to take it apart and salvage the bricks to make a real oven. You cannot reform the wires after they have been heated I have been told. You don't need a big oven unless making swords then it is still a question of length not volume. Mine was worth it just for the use I have gotten and the brick for the iven I am going to built.

Yes - brick/clay kilns work best when they heat slowly. Not that great for heat-treat. :(

just wanted to add - if I was to pick 2 things that were the best bang-for-buck...most used and most appreciated...

It would be my heat-treat oven and my KMG grinder.

I've made back every penny spent on the oven - probably tenfold. Same with the KMG.
Like buying a car so you can go to work. ;)
