I have a line on getting a kiln (free) from a jewelery / pottery maker. Any value added benefit to this in regards to knife making? I know I can't use it for HTing, is there another use that I'm overlooking?

Depending on the size you could use it to anneal steel at a very controlled rate. If the safety mechanism is what is stopping your from using it for HT; you could remove the mechanism.

You could rig it up for be digitally controlled and use it for HT. You can also HT simple carbon steels in it easily with an infinite switch, as long as your pyrometer is accurate.

You can add a stainless tube with low temp salts and convert it into a tempering salt pot.

Great!!! See, from everything that I've read, people seemed against it for HTing because of ramp times and such. All I know is she has 6 kilns of varying sizes. I'm waiting to find out what exactly she has. Hey, you never know, she might actually have an Evenheat that she just references as a kiln :)
