Kilt experience?

GreyKilt,
So it was illegal to wear your Kilt back in the day? Make something illegal even for a day and there will always be a dedicated group that just have to wear it, smoke it, Play it. etc…….

Well each to his own, and you boys enjoy your kilts!

One thing I want to add for anyone that may think they would like a kilt but get hung up on the whole skirt issue. A kilt is as much of a skirt as that button up shirt you own is a blouse. Period. One is what a women wears one is what a man wears but they are basically the same thing. Don't get hung up on small minded people.

So I got a 5.11 kilt for a reasonable 75 bucks... And so far I'm loving it.. Super comfortable, nice for hot days, and great pockets!

I'm not hung up about wearing anything that works. I lived in W.Malaysia years ago and wore a Sarong when working at the beach and in small boats with the local fisherman. I believe the OP asked about wearing a Kilt in the field and if it had any advantages?

Also a Blouse is only different than a shirt cause the buttons are on the other side and a Kilt & Skirt are two names for a wrap around your waist garment and a pair of pants wrap around each leg and have a zipper in the front as i'm sure you know.

I can't think of a single women that i've even known that would wear a skirt when we were hiking camping and the like?

My comment was not directed at you Rhino. You know it is funny, I have never seen a girl wear a skirt or another guy wear a kilt out in the sticks until I moved to Colorado. I have seen it a few times, not enough to say that it was common mind you but have been to pretty hard to get to places outside or Boulder and Estes Park and seen people wearing them. Of course you can see all kinds of strangeness in and around around the Boulder area lol. I agree with how you describe a kilt and compare it to a skirt believe it or not. That said I think you can say almost the same thing about a button up shirt and a blouse. Something that covers your torso has sleeves that go over at least some of your arm and has buttons in the front to close it. It is just that one is made for a women and one for a man but when you get down to it not that different. Kinda the point I was trying to make. Guess I did need to answer the OP question a bit thanks for getting it back on topic. I love my kilt but it is a really rough area or one that I don't know I would not consider wearing mine. maybe carry it for around the camp but not getting there.

Mark,
I lived in Boulder in the late 70's and they had one at least of everything back then including me! LOL . Now I live in Santa Monica and we have one of everything here too!

The new wave of men wearing kilts just might make the old saying about who wear's the pants in the marriage obsolete! ;)

Clothing is really just clothing when it comes down to it. If its works and is comfortable? Go for it.

Alright, well, I’m going to attempt a kilt for backpacking. I picked up a Mt. Hardware version and I like the two large pockets. We’ll see how it goes, but I’ve been wearing it around the house for the last few days…it’s…interesting. I’m still assessing the value.

Now, as to skirts, well, my wife is not a “skirt” girl for work (teacher) but has taken a liking to them for our distance backpacking trips (she just did a 115 mile section on the AT). These are “athletic” skirts. She loves them for many reasons on the trail. She can pee much easier with her “shenis” where she doesn’t have to remove her pack and during the fall and early spring, she can wear them with wool long-underwear and remove as it warms up. She gets much better airflow and there is no hindrance of her mobility. They work for her and she can out-hike most guys I know…it’s more about function then fashion for her.

Now, this last section hike was quite hot and humid. My shirt, shorts and underwear (Ex Officio) were soaked for the first few days and just wouldn’t dry until I built a fire and dried them out. I’m hoping the kilt will help (if I can get over the mental hurdle of wearing one). Still, there is some value if you can get over the mental discomfort of having open access to your junk. I’m not sold on them, but I do want to give it a shot and see how it does.

I got a 5.11 kilt I wear around the house sometimes. I was surprised how warm it can get. But it is comfortable. I can't see running around town in one.

You may not know, but the 5.11 designation is a climb difficulty rating on the Yosemite scale back when the 5.11 brand of clothing belonged to Royal Robbins, a climber who marketed clothing to climbers. I say that because I find it odd to link "5.11" with kilts and to ask, would anyone climb in a kilt?:barf:

I've been wearing the Mountain Hardwear Elkkomando hiking kilt for the last year and have taken it on several day hikes and a five day backpack trip through the High Sierras. Since its brown it kinda blends in and goes unnoticed most of the time. It is much more breathable than hiking in shorts but the best part is the comfortable waistband under a pack belt and the ease of highstepping over logs and boulders. Just be sure to be careful not to expose yourself when you take a rest stop at popular trailheads.
