Aside from the silliness, I think John Powell said once that it is "Koo-Kree", and most often spelled "kukri", not khukuri.
Hmmm, it's always been my understanding as well that our good John Powell uses "kukri" for the spelling and "Koo-Kree" as the correct, or most common, way to pronounce the word for our bent knife.Thomas Linton said:John can speak for himself, but he doesn't seem to spell it kukri. He spells it khukuri so far as I have examples.
Uncle Bill is the one that brought the "proper" Nepali way of spelling and pronouncing Khukuri too the knife world and says it is most proper and correct form of using the word. And in spite of Uncle Bill trying to educate us I imagine that kukri will be the word to win out at the end.
You have to admit that it is much easier to spell and to pronounce.
English is a dynamic language and spelling and usage and meaning of words are in constant change as is any language that is alive and well.
Personally I think either could/should be considered correct.
The Cherokee in charge of such things just this last year decided to drop, I know two, and I'm almost certain three, of the characters that have been part of our syllabary since it was finalized in Sequoyah's time as they were almost duplicated by a couple of other characters and weren't really needed in today's modern Cherokee Language.
