Mini rant

I really like how spyderco produces exclusives but can't stand people buying multiples for profit .. so I'm not really sick of the exclusives.. I'm sick of not being able to get certain ones lol

I want to use the different blade steels for work to see which I like the the best ... but the limited numbers and quick buy ups make it very hard to

It's not spydercos fault , I'll just have to try and find a way to hawk upcoming releases better

But damnit let the users use lol

I'm sure there has to be some other people that feel the same as me

I am very happy about the upcoming cruwear pm2 and hope it's not hard to purchase

Why does the fastest runner win the race? Doesn't seem fair.

Someone should invent a trophy that anyone participating in the event would be awarded.

Or at least a ribbon.

It could be called a "Showy Trophy" you know, for showing up.

I agree with you as a consumer!

Yet I also understand how important sprints & exclusives might be for marketing & revenue of distributors & Spyderco. If sprints and exclusives keep retailer doors open and a robust standard production catalogue rolling, I can live with it.

I really like Spyderco’s recent move to add new steel to evergreen models (like K390 & LC200N) as well as keeping a few production models around with Maxamet, S110V, etc.

I also really appreciate when they take an evergreen model and turn it into a regular production grail (eg the fluted CF Native 5, the old fluted Ti Mili & the upcoming PM2 Micarta C-W). Things like that really lessen the sting of missing the Rex-45 Shaman, etc.

With enough money most things can be bought. The question is, are you willing to pay the secondary market price ??
Unfortunately, I’m hardly ever in the position to compete in the frenzy of a release. So, if I want one, it’s on the secondary market I have to turn to. If I feel the price is reasonable, I’ll buy one. If not, I won’t buy it.
I’ve been content with the ones I’ve got.

Exclusives are better than sprints. If they do well, they can be repeated. And if they don't, they can be discounted, because the retailers are in charge of the pricing.

Very true I have paid secondary prices a few times , the harsh part for me though is 95% of my knives end up at work and if I don't like the knife I'm at a loss selling the knife as a user

It is what it is , I can't really be mad because it's still nice a company will give us the opportunities to try different steels

Thanks for the input I respect your opinion

I'll be happy using what I have at work till I get a chance to try some new stuff out

Same here, but I try not to sell at a hurting loss. Can’t say I’ve come out ahead on any knife that I’ve sold. But, I don’t begrudge folks that do make money, at least I know I can get something if the price is reasonable.
If this knife thing wasn’t a hobby, I’d probably be pissed every time I sold a knife.

Yeah this is true of any hobby. Limited editions and such always get scalped by people with gamblers addiction. They certainly got their dopamine all a'spinin hoarding products during the covid scare I'm sure.

That's the good and the bad of exclusives (and applies somewhat to sprints as well). No other company provides us the chance to use steels such as Rex45 and K390. OTOH yes it is upsetting when people buy them up strictly with the intent of reselling them for profit. These days it is somewhat the same in a lot of hobbies, the people buying up a new Exclusive today will be buying the latest tennis shoe tomorrow and the latest barbie doll the next day.
Sprints for me seem to be easier to get than exclusives. The scammers can set up their robots to buy an exclusive as soon as it is released but sprints get released by different retailers on different days. You can get notifications from your favorite retailer and you have a chance.
I easily have more knives than I can use but I really wanted to buy one of the recent red/4V exclusives. They turned out to be extremely difficult to get. The latest Rex45 Manix 2 LW was one that I really wanted so I asked several retailers for notifications and managed to get one. If I had really wanted one of the red/4V models I would have had to pay the inflated secondary market prices. Some of those models might actually be worth it in the grand scheme of things, considering the performance you get, but it is still frustrating to have to pay higher prices for it.
I always look forward to new exclusives, in the event that there is something new that I really want, but I like the popular models and those are the ones that are most difficult to get. Fortunately if you wait there are a good number of them that come along so don't fret too much about missing out on any particular one.

This is true. It is so true. No other manufacturer will do the work and give us a pricey steel. Spyderco will at least go to the trouble to try to give us nice things. We are truly blessed with whoever in administration allows their company to strive for this uniqueness in product lines. It's why I prefer them over anyone else, but need to check myself because competitors at times do indeed have better products for certain applications and price points. WE/Civivi will never in a million years have such alternatives though lol.

I chased the sprint/exclusive rabbit for a number of years. With each passing year, it got more and more competitive. I cannot sit in front of the computer waiting for the release and my funds are not unlimited, so the secondary market is a little tough to deal with. I have managed to pick up a few, but it is all but impossible for me to chase it these days as you have to be lightening quick to get in on the releases. Spyderco has enough models that are regularly produced to keep me happy.

I really support them offering exclusives.
I love to find different offerings available in some hard to find steels and unique variations.

I've got burned on one offering and that's okay.
I will Not buy on the secondary market any exclusive offerings. The seller beat me on the offering and took that item from me. I'm not going to pay for that.

I like the exclusives and am glad I can’t get them all. It makes it fun and exciting, and honestly, I would be fine just using S30V all the time.

I'm fine with exclusives and sprints...but I will not participate in the machinations and gyrations necessary to obtain a knife, even if of particular interest, beyond a simple attempt to place an order with the stocking dealer(s). If I can't get through, so be it. Life's too short to sit at the keyboard refreshing a screen like a hamster on a wheel.

Occasionally, I've found those knives at a later date at a bargain price on the exchange here. I've never overpaid...and don't intend to.

That said, I wish bon chance and good fortune to those who take on that task for themselves.

Spyderco is a great company and Sal is a nice man :thumbsup: I appreciate their effort on producing so many exclusives and sprints. Please keep doing that.

As for me personally, I no longer chase those exclusives and sprints as hard and actively as before because (1) my knife interest is now more focused, (2) I no longer feel that I must have all or any of them, and (3) if I miss one, I trust there will another even better one manufactured by Spyderco sooner or later.
