I have seen a few people carrying these, I see them for sale on the exchange here and because I was left with a short piece of steel at the forge this week I thought I would try my hand at one. Here are a few questions that someone might help me with.

First, I think I beveled it for a lefty?
When I did at search I found the this style was made for wood working. What other uses and how is it held?
Did I get the angle right on the edge: I see some with the bevel almost at right angles to the handle and some with a long blade.
Everything that I have seen is chisel ground; are some hollow ground or beveled on both sides?
I made this one from 3/16 inch stock. Wouldn't thinner stock slice better for everyday use?

Thanks, guys I would appreciate any information.

Hey Drew, I don't know everything about Dashi' but I have made a few. Yes, that one is beveled for a lefty. From what I understand they were/are the Japanese version of a utility knife and are used for woodworking, pruning trees, etc.. Personally, I always put the edge at about 45-60 degrees to the handle. I also increase the bevel angle considerably more than this one but that's just me. I'm sure there are some double bevel and hollow ground Dashi' out there but I don't recall ever seeing one. As far as stock thickness, thin always cuts better but thicker stock feels a little better in the hand. With the right bevel angle and a zero edge, even ones made from 1/4" stock cut very well.
Increase your handle to edge angle a tad, put a steeper bevel on one, and try it out, I think you'll like it. I have em laying all over the shop. LOL

Thanks for the information, Darrin. I think I will make another one to use in my shop and give this one to HomeBru

I don't see how you are going to sharpen that one with such a pitted surface on the non bevel side of your chisel grind. Traditionally the flat side is relieved with a hollow.
