I need to make a slip case for a kiridashi. I am wondering if it need a welt, or if I make it really tight so the pressure from the front and back retained it. Maybe even put a kydex trough in the bottom? It's a very pointy kiridashi,so I'm worrying about cutting stitches. IMG_20170801_000631182.jpg

Just make a good welt out of heavy leather. You could skive to taper the welt as it moves away from the area where the point will be touching. That way it could blend back into a weltless seam towards the upper part of the sheath. You might even want to use heavy/dense shoe leather, because that thing is pointy. You could always thin it down with the skiving knife until it’s the width you want. You really are going to need a welt though IMO

I struggled with this for several months, leather and kydex.
My ultimate solution was to use kydex with eyelets, and decide that I preferred (I do) to sharpen the back side of the bevel instead of doing it in true chisel fashion. I only use foam on the "top" beveled side of the blade while in the kydex press. The flat side is flat against the base plate/board (only pix of top sides here):
