Hey guys, just got a quick one here.

My girl friend and I just got a new car. Now, of course i've got a nice kit made up, with all the stuff but thats in the trunk, so I got thinking today, It would be nice to have a Strong little fixed close to the front seat. You know, used for things like cutting seat beats, or god forbid an un wanted hand coming in the window

Now, i've looked over a few, but what im looking for is a fixed blade, with a partial, or fully serrated blade. Doesn't have to be wonder steel, just to get through cutting seatbelts, and the like. Also, something under 8" oal. as in 4" blade or less. I'd like some sort of drop, or clip point. But how would a warncliff desgin fair?

Theres something like a carson F4, which I like, but I can really think of any more, nor have anymore come up during some searching.

Try doing a search for knives specifically made for fire/EMT personnel. There are tons of them out there. . . The only drawback is that a lot of them have blunt tips to as to avoid inadvertently stabbing someone while cutting a seatbelt. This would limit its functionality as a self defense weapon against someone reaching into your car. You may not have the room to slash.

I think there is a fully serrated CRKT Bear Claw with a sharp point, and I know there is one with a blunt point.

I like the idea but I do have one question. If you got pulled over for say speeding and the cop saw the blade how would it go over? I keep a blade in my visor and have always wonder what a cop would do if he saw it.

Cheers

How are knife laws in your neck of the woods? I don't know about Canada, but here in the USA, many, if not most of the states and counties in those states, have fairly strict laws concerning the keeping of a fixed blade knife in the passenger cabin of a vehicle. Here where I live in California, the knife would have to be placed in the trunk.

Have you thought about a good folder for the seatbelts and other duties? Vic has a couple lockblade models with curved serrated blades just for cutting seatbelts. The fireman and their new rescue tool come to mind.

Anything can happen, so that you can't get to the trunk of your vehicle, so you might want to keep a small kit inside of the passenger cabin and during the winter months, it wouldn't hurt to have a good sized kit inside with you that will keep you warm and hydrated.

Yeah, I may just end up getting one with a blunt tip as the defense part isnt on a top priorty. I'd rather be able to cut belts than anything else, and for that matter I can bunch a guy in the head, but I am worried about my girlfriend aswell.

Oh yeah the kits are no problem, its spring and we dont go to far out side the city. But knife laws are laked, many have them, but there are kinda problems around with crimes and knives, so police are skeptical. But thats the reason I wanted a smaller knife. Its to be kept in the container between the seats, and if we were pulled over, and for reason they needed to search the vehicle, which there wouldn't be. than the reason for the knife would be cutting seat belts and what not.

But I though about folding knives, I have a fireman model and like it, but I want something that can be handled qucikly, ie no opening, just right there when you need it you know?

It seams to me that a "rescue" knife would be looked upon in a better light by a cop wouldn't it? Aren't some of the folder made for quick access like assisted open etc...

Thats what I was thinking, something with bright colors, which would be good. Not mean looking, but usful.

I cant help think a Spyderco Folder, is right up your alley, They do make blunt tip rescue models (Resue, Assist, Salt) and pretty much every model is available in partial serrations or full serations, I Keep one in the car all the time, you can clip it to your shirt, seat belt, sun visor or other location in a crappy neigborhood to allow an easy draw for Self Defense,

Models Like the Delica, and Dragonfly are smal but still have plenty of cutting ability.

The Assist is specificaly designed as an extrication Tool, It had a glass breaker on the back and some inovative designes to allow you to maximize cutting ability,

Oh yeah Im a big spyderco Fan :D

I dont know, I mean the spyderco salts, and one that are fully serrated are nice. But you are an ems rescue guy :D, what would be better a fixed or folder?

I'm not sure I see the problem. You aren't actually going to give a cop permission to search your vehicle, right? So keep a small fixed blade handy but out of sight. PUt it in your console or mount it under your seat.

I really cant say, I have only ever carried a folder on ems duty, I have used Spydercos, columbia rivers, and buck crosslocks, Spydercos are my favorite, They just hold up very well, and cut like a pack of starving crazed beavers on steroids.

Thee are also Seat belt cutters that are available comercially, these are often inexpensive but not really good as a knife.

Not arguing that, which is what I'd like to have a fixed blade.

might I reccomend a Sog seal pup it's partially serrated and will whiz through a seat belt like nothing it's make a decent self defense blade and is sturdy enough to be a decent survival knife if you should need to abandon ship in a hurry I love mine and they can be had for a scant 50 beans...personally on the job I've only used the serrated blade on my LM wave for seatbelt duty.

the seal would be a bit too big, and police officer wouldn't go for it, I would think at least. :D

That's exactly what I keep in the bottom tray of my console too. And again, I don't see how its a question of a policeman "going for it" either. I don't drink and drive and I don't carry drugs in my car and I'm definitely NEVER going to consent to a vehicle search, simply to stand up for our constitutional rights, which are constantly eroding.

Fonley, I just noticed you live in Canada, so maybe the rights regarding a vehicle search are different there. If so, my apologies (and condolences).

No no, not needed. I am in no way disagreeing with you, I am agreeing with you. I have no reason for an officer to search my car. It was just a "if one were too" you know, I would reather him find a yellow handled knife with a blunt tip, that I could explain is there for cutting seat belts not me or someone else ;)

But I know what you mean, some fixed rescuess looking and with a 4" blade would be perfect.

You know what, now that I think about it more, A multitool would probably be more practical. Serrated blade, normal one, file, saw and pliars for who knows what could need them.

May just have to get another wave
