I always love seeing threads about parents putting together little adventure kits for their kids... but it makes me want a kit full of goodies too! (The "Kit Items for My Daughters" thread below is what prompted me to post this.)

What would you put in a kit for yourself just to play with in the woods behind your house (you know what I mean). Lets see if we can keep it simple, inexpensive, and able to fit in a small backpack.

My adventure kit:
Small Backpack
Vic Pioneer
Gerber BG Scout Knife
Becker BK-2 (Not so inexpensive, but I already own it.)
550 Cord Kit (5 and 10 Foot Sections)
Firesteel
Vaseline Cottonballs (Tinder)
Matches
Compass
Map of the Area (Maybe.)
Fresnel Magnifier
Gloves and Eye Protection
Tarp (Probably 4x6 or 6x8. Something in that range.)
Small First Aid Kit
Flashlight
Steel Waterbottle
Iodine
Fishing Kit
Snare Wire
Chainsaw
Snacks

I would probably also bring my copy of SAS Survival Handbook by John Wiseman. I figure I would amend the kit based on what sort of trouble I wanted to get into. But this sounds like a good start to a "Hey, lets hike down the river today!" type of kit.

I like keeping my 550 cord in either 50 or 100 foot lengths. That way I can cut off what I need and if I need it longer than five or ten feet then I don't have to tie lengths together.

Same here. Or I will carry one long spool of 100ft with a few 5ft sections wrapped around it (different color) so I have the option of grabbing a quick piece without having to cut or if need be there are longer lengths to be had.

My current kit:
1 SS bottle 1 Nalgene
550 cord as mentioned
Vic Farmer or Vic Hiker
Para2
Becker BK16
Firesteel
Fatwood
Stormproof Matches
Bic
Mini First Aid Kit that includes things like safety pins and zip ties with other obvious FA stuff
Compass
Handkerchief
Heavy Duty Poncho
Sun Screen spray that has insect repellant in it
Signal Mirror
Small Sewing Kit
Beanie and Gloves just incase
Snacks, snacks, snacks :D

I'm sure I'll read this later and realize I left out like 5 things. BTW the BK-16 only comes along for really long hikes or overnighters, usually it stays home.

I've got another bag coming in. So it's back to these lists again, which can be kind of fun actually.

I've got a random bag of goodies that I always toss into my hiking bag, in addition to food/water/first aid stuff. It's got paracord, duct tape, electrical tape (works wonders for lashing stuff tightly together, since you stretch it while wrapping and it shrinks back afterwards, tightening down whatever you wrapped it around), a fishing kit in a 1.5" by 4" waterproof container, water purification tablets, compass, matches, tinder, and a solar charger/battery for my phone.

My car, which I would hope would be nearby, also has a lot more paracord and duct tape, as well as a Red Cross survival first aid kit, machete, jacket, blanket, gloves, hat, butane for my lighter, and enough food and water for a couple days.

The stuff in my carry kit actually fits in a quart sized ziplock bag.

i'd add an emberlit or some kind of wood stove to your kit. the thing with the emberlit is that it lets me do the whole wood/fire prep and have a real camp fire/atmosphere without all the work and resulting big fire...it really is a joy to play with.

(i'm not making any money from emberlit or associated with the owner - just one satisfied user spreading the word how awesome this gear is).

I also carry a monocular, sketch pad & pencil, a jaw harp, curry powder, cinnamon, honey, tea bags, emergen-c, and hard candy.
