Dar,
I think ever "kit" is a personal thing as an extension of its user. Also, different according to geography, creators medical needs...etc. The one question you have to ask of every kit is.. "Can it keep me alive"?
That being said, sure, there are staples to every pack. IMO
1. Fire (multiple sources of various creation means. Bic, matches, firesteel, Fresnel lense)
1a. Tinder (fuel sticks, petroleum cotton balls..etc)
2. Shelter (Emergency Blanket, 55 Gall trash bags)
3. Hydration (Something to act as a container and a means of purification)
4. Nutrition (I always include multi-vitamins and high calorie meal bars)
5. Knives (Plural. A good solid fixed blade and a folder or SAK)
6. Signaling (again multiple sources. Signaling mirror, pealess whistle, bright cloth, laser pointer..even the reflective surface of the emergency blanket)
7. Pen & Notebook (this is to self sustain as well as a log of what is to BE done and what has BEEN done. Also for navigation)
8. Compass (self explanatory)
8a. the KNOWLEDGE to USE the compass
9. Rope / Cordage (The uses are endless, shelter, trauma, signaling) at least 100ft & I prefer true 550 cord which can be seperated into strands for a total of 700 FT.
10. A form of written survival skills (optional of course, but under stress the human brain does a dump and all those skills you have committed to memory can go out the window. I prefer the pocket version of the SAS survival manual by John Wiseman)
11. Small Fishing / Game trapping Kit.
12. First Aid kit (Immodium, Benedryl, Pain killers, trauma wrapping/bandages, and some form of "upper". Dont wanna fall asleep exposed in freezing weather)
Anyhow, I hope this helps some. These are of course my opinion and your survival priorities can change as easy as your geography.
