Kitchen Convection oven to heat treat?

I have used a large toaster oven without problems but I am aware of the variability in the temps due to the proximity of the coils.

If an oven thermometer is used, can a convection oven be as reliable as a purchased heating unit?

Actually I bought one as a quick cheap replacement for the Paragon oven I lost in a fire. It never gets as hot as the setting says it is but does seem to hold the temp better than the toaster ovens I have tried in the past. I still use it today for my first temper cycle while my Even Heat is cooling off after I used it to harden a blade.

Just grab an oven thermometer and place it in the oven to verify the temps. You may want to place a brick in the oven to increase thermal mass and help stabilize the temperatures.

Tool Steel Simplified discusses different types of tempering ovens and claims that an internal fan is of significant benefit. So a convection oven would likely be a better tempering oven.

firebrick and thermometer then. I figured the fan would help with stabile temps-

thanks all!
