kitchen knife injury

last night while chopping vegetables I cut my pinky finger or at least I thought I did. blood would not stop streaming so I could not get a good look at it. I kept holding up my arm and applying pressure but every time I removed the towel the blood started again. taped it in gauze for the night but it was hell to remove this morning and it felt like the fingertip was stuck to the gauze. so when I pulled it away it started bleeding again.
I have now gotten the bleeding to stop by applying turmeric paste. I was able to get a clear look at the wound and to me it looks like there is no skin there. so it may be the skin of my pinky fingertip got sliced clean off, which maybe explains why the blood wouldn't stop - there's no skin there so the wound cant close?

I'm just leaving the turmeric paste on there for now. so far no new bleeding, but i'm concerned that my fingertip looks like a bloody stump, wondering how exactly that can heal? previously ive only had injuries that were obvious cuts that could close up.

any advice from anyone here who has suffered a similar injury for what measures to take for the fastest recovery?

even though the bleeding has stopped for the moment im assuming if i bump it by mistake it could start again since the area is exposed and vulnerable. would it be a good idea to apply something like woundseal powder even though there is no active bleeding at the moment?

appreciate your feedback!

1st post troll? I'll bite . . .

Why don't you go to the ER to have a doctor look at it?

FWIW, I nearly cut the tip of my left index finger off w/an electric hedge trimmer. Blood everywhere. Wrapped it w/paper towels (the only thing available) applied pressure as I drove to a urgent care facility nearby (where I was told they couldn't deal w/it) and then drove to the nearest ER.

They sewed it up and all was well as far as treatment was concerned. Healed ok but still feels numb where the injury occured.

I sliced my tip off with artichoe hearts. Man up. I super glued it and will see how it heals. No tendons involved, no knife involved. Quit your whinging.

It will heal. I recently had something cut out of my knee. The hole was as big as a nickel and the thickness of five nickels deep. It took a few months but it filled back in and healed fine.

keep it covered in Vaseline. And bandaged.

eveled, thanks for the advice, will do that.

sgt, I considered ER but no insurance so would rather handle it myself if possible. I knew the wound could not be that deep. My main concern was the blood kept streaming out even 15 hours later, despite keeping arm raised and applying pressure numerous times, since all medical guides I consulted on the web said clot should form and bleeding stop within 10-15 mins. fortunately I found out about turmeric an applied it - so far so good.

Wash off the turmeric paste.

Wash the pinky finger.

Apply anti-bacterial ointment or cream.

Assuming you have no infection and the bleeding has stopped:
Apply hydrocolloid dressing
otherwise:
Telfa pad and/or gauze

Don't take advice on wound care from a knife forum, see a doctor, find a nurse, ask a vet, seek advice from SOMEONE who has some actual training in wound care at the very least (unless you don't mind going to the ER or seeing your GP).

Meh, I’d just clean that up really good and cover it in super glue.

If there’s nothing to “close”, what do you think a dr will do? Skin graft? Nah. They’d probably slather it in “New Skin” (which is super glue), charge you an arm, a leg, and two penises, and send you home.

I said to use Vaseline because every time I recommend super glue I get yelled at.

I'm no doctor, but I did watch most episodes of House MD. From everything I learned watching that show I believe you're definitely a liar and we need to break into your house for some reason.

Probably to find out that your wife's cheating on you with a pygmy and has passed you a rare parasite. Good news is, you don't have leukemia like I originally thought.

It doesn’t “heal” all the way. You’ll probably have a flat spot on that finger as a battle (clumsy) scar. I have a nice flat spot on my right thumb from not knowing how to properly use a mandolin in my younger days.

it will heal enough and you’ll be on with your life. “There is no normal life. There is only life. Get on with it.”
