Who makes kitchen knife blocks?

Where do you guys get yours?

Anybody do it "on the side"?

I got customers...willing to pay! :D :p

Let me know.

Thanks!

Dan

p.s. don't say "make your own"...because I got neither the tools nor the time! :(

I had to make the one and only one myself. My knife set was unique and all needed to match.
Corian makes a good material for blocks. just my 2 cents

I have made them with 1"X4" and 1"X6" hardwoods. I've made them from Oak, Walnut and Mesquite. You cut the boards to length and shape, then use good wood glue to laminate the block.

I use a router to make the knife slots before glueing up the boards. After laminating the pieces, I pin the whole assembly together with dowells-either the same wood, or something that contrasts well.

talking about chopping blocks (got confused): go to florida, find a nice young tamarind tree (14" diameter max). get the necessary permits to cut it down and truck it over to your place. lay it down inside your garage over two saw horses. everytime a housewife drops by for a chopping block, you get your chainsaw and slice off a 3-inch thick section from the trunk.

I'm also open to interesting ideas...

Here's your traditional knife block:

but there's also these:

...and so on...

I just picked up a Kapoosh myself (got it at the local Bed, Bath and Beyond). I think the block is great. You can fit a lot more knives in it than you can in a regular block. My only complaint is that it's not quite tall enough to bury my 9" blades all the way.

Looks like a great idea - I'll check it out - thanks!
