Kitchen knives?

I turned my back for a second last week and my not quite two year old grabbed a cheese grater and started running away from me. All I could envision was him face planting on it. Fortunately I snagged it before he did any damage.

I had a two year old who helped me replace a car windshield one time. He found a ball pein hammer under the front seat and helped with the removal of the old windshield ... which up to that point didn't need to be replaced.

This is going to sound crazy after some of the great suggestions given, but I suggest a $40ish Farberware block set. I agree with some who say "just get an 8" chef and 3-4" paring and maybe a bread knife" I have them and use them when needed but I also enjoy using many of my "non kitchen knives" just for the heck of it. :D I got one of their sets many (ugh) years ago and learned what I liked as the years went by (oh so rapidly). No need to worry about them and you can buy a nice version of the ones you use and like a lot. My guess is the 3 knife (chef, paring and?) will be your eventual choice. My .02

I like this idea. Could just slowly replace them as the years go by.

Lots of helpful ideas here, I'll take them all into consideration, thanks guys.
