Can someone post directions or provide a link to a site that explains heat treating with a kitchen oven?

You cannot harden your work in a kitchen oven but you can temper to relieve stress in your oven and the temp is based on how hard you want your finished product and the type of steel used.

It's also a good idea to use a supplemental thermometer, as the dial on the oven is not very well regulated to an accurate temperature. Some guys put their blades in sand to help limit the temperature swings as the oven cycles on and off, but I haven't gotten around to that yet.

It all depends on your steel. You have to know (or at least have an idea) of what you're working with in order to know target temperatures (which will be in excess of 1450F at a minimum...much higher than a kitchen oven can get you). You can use a kitchen oven to temper, but not to harden.

What type of steel?
