The 2014 KITH is now closed. Below is the list of makers participating.

This is the KITH thread;
http://www.bladeforums.com/forums/showthread.php/1225352-2014-Annual-Christmas-KITH

This "I'm Ready" thread is where you post your "I'm Ready" statement that actually puts you in the KITH. Posting a photo of the completed knife is also a good idea. All participants must post "I'm Ready" by midnight Dec. 1. 2014 to be in the KITH. No exceptions. If it isn't done, or didn't come out quite like you planned, there is always next year's KITH to plan for.

Those in the KITH by Dec.1st will get a name and address for the person who will receive their entry. The names will be drawn by a random matching program.

The knife should be securely wrapped and packed. It should have a case or sheath as is fitting the style. There should be a certificate or note in the box with all the details about the knife ( metals, handle, special notes, etc.). Taping the knife and case to a larger piece of cardboard to prevent sliding around in the box is a good idea, so is plenty of bubble-wrap. It should be sent to the recipient, insured, preferably by Priority Mail.....with a tracking number. Once mailed, the sender should email the tracking number and date sent to me to allow keeping track of the knives in delivery. I will put up a "Woo-Hoo, my KITH knife arrived." thread after the knives are sent.

Before entering, realize that there is a mailing expense, and some members of the KITH are overseas. (overseas senders will get special instructions as to their recipient and shipping methods). If you can not afford the shipping costs of the KITH knife, don't enter. Don't scrimp and try to save a few bucks by sending it parcel post. Shipping by Priority Mail with tracking has so far never had a undelivered knife ( other methods have).

I will keep the list of those in the KITH here, including the shipped and received notes as they happen:

Someone asked what a KITH was:

KITH = Knife In The Hat

It was a term from the depression when out of work folks and/or hobos would sit around whittling to pass time. Every now and then they would put their knives in a hat and cover it with a kerchief. Each would reach in and take out a "new" knife. They often did this once a week to make the time pass and have something to be excited about.
Now days a KITH is any blind swap or present exchange. You don't know who the recipient will be and he won't know the giver until after he gets it. Thus "Christmas KITH", "Mini KITH", Summer KITH", etc

I'm still in. I have to shape the handle, and the scabbard is cut out. I should be done this week.

Fellows, Please post when it is done, not that you are still working on it. This thread will get confusing with too many extraneous posts.
If you want to post in progress or other things, use the main KITH thread.

P1030331.jpgYou know what they say, "run with the big dogs or stay on the porch". I'm ready. Steve Beckwith
P1030330.jpgThe steel is 1084 from Aldo, the wood is stabilized tiger maple from Burl Source, hilt and butt cap are nickel silver.

I'm ready and would like to enter the 2014 KITH

It has a 3 7/8" blade that I think makes a good user knife.
It is stainless Niolox, hand sanded to 1500.
The handle is Irish bog oak. It was sold to me as being app. 8000yo.
I find it hard to capture on camera, but the wood has a lot going on in a discrete dark package. It is hand sanded to 2500.
A vegetable tanned sheath with a chrome tanned top.
I hope it will make somebody happy.

Please forgive the simple pictures I'll ask the GF to take better ones.

Niolox:
(aka SB1, or 1.4153.03)
(C) 0,8%, (Cr) 12,7%, (Mo) 1,1%, (V) 0,9%, (Nb) 0,7%, (Fe) Rest

OK, good to go.

Tapered tang in AEB-L with stabilized Wenge over G10 liners and CF pins.

Enjoy and Merry Christmas!

And that bog oak looks real nice in that third pic Hengelo!

I'm ready. I'll put up pics tonight. I have a few errands to run during the day. I ended up doing a kitchen knife as I sold the full tang knife , and I wasn't happy with the tang/ricasso :thumbdn: on the other one. 1/16" 15n20 Rc62, polished purpleheart sheath and handle.

There is something wrong with my camera, even though its focusing well, it isn't saving clear images. Maybe the CCD is going. Anyway, here's the knife:

The sheath is wood that is identical to the handle, in fact the sheath and handle were all cut from one block of wood so the grain flows front to back. I have an adjustment on the sheath, as the wood swelled slightly after being oiled, so I have to lightly sand the inside to get a perfect fit.
