Kiwi edge sub-par out of box

I just recieved my Spyderco Kiwi today, and I love the design, blade centering is perfect and the overall fit and finish is great. The problem is when I went to do the ol' paper cutting test, it wouldn't even begin to slice through the paper. Has anyone else had problems with their factory edge on their spydies?

When it comes to out of the box sharpness, Spyderco does a fantastic job 99% of the time. But the edges are done by hand and, like all of us, even the best sharpener has the occasional lapse. Out of three or four hundred new ones, I've gotten less than a half dozen that needed sharpening when received. Not a problem for me. If it's a knife I'm going to use, it will need sharpening sooner or later. If it's destined to be a display piece, my curio cabinet will never know the difference.

I wouldn't buy a knife if I didn't know how to sharpen.

To paraphrase a post I've seen, the complaining I hear about "defects" on knives lately, boggles my mind.

Out of 100+ which I owned I had one micarta Caly Jr with huge burr. Not a problem. Sharpmaker can fix it.

It's just that it's the first Spydie I've handled, let alone owned, that hasn't been razor sharp out of box. It really doesn't bother me that much. It has a somewhat usable edge on it. I brought it to work today and it performed ok.

I believe I saw that same post earlier...
I don't really consider this a "defect", I was just surprised by it's lack of sharpness.

Well, the "good news" is that straight edged blades like the Kiwi's Wharncliffe are the easiest blades to sharpen. I'm also guessing your knife is one of the new Kiwi SlipIt's, since the original locking ones have gotten quite scarce. If that's the case, while 8Cr13MoV doesn't holding an edge as well as some of the other steels Spyderco uses, it takes a wicked sharp one quite easily.

Yeah, I'm planning on fixing the edge tonight when I get the time. Not too worried about it because as you said, it's a wharncliffe and it's an easy to sharpen steel.

Mine came very Sharp, only issue is that the blade is a bit thick in my opinion for it's use, so even with a sharp edge, it's not too great with certain tasks like peeling an apple.
