i always think of Trade Blankets as one of my favorite parts of wilderness outings with buddies, so i reckon this belongs here.

i'm thinking about coming down there to Australia and/or New Zealand for some dirt time, and maybe a hog hunt and some SCUBA.

would it be a decent idea to bring down a bunch of TOPS knives and other USA-made stuff as gifts and trade blanket goodies...?

i hate to show up empty-handed. it just doesn't seem polite when ya come invading folks' space.

any suggestions on big favorites down there, mates?

how much Guinness Stout and Rugby tickets can i get for an ECO Hawk or Ontario Machetes? :D:thumbup:

Guinness Stout is very important, and good wool clothing is high on my list too.

cheers, and TIA.

Well, being a high school student I wouldn't know how much beer...mmm...

As for Rugby tickets, depends if you're talking International or Domestic but I don't think you'll have any problems.

Make sure you come down to Melbourne!

Hi Vec,
you heading to New South Wales? Tops knives always go down well... the anaconda and armageddon in particular. I've been visiting the hoodlums too much.

A gifts a gift, a trade is a trade, and all would be well recieved - come on down and enjoy it.

Before you load up your bag with knives make sure you know what is, and isn't, legal to bring in. You don't want customs grabbing hold of them.

Wander over to the Australian sub forum here and have a read of the sticky at the top. That has some info to point you in the right direction.

'sounds like excellent advice, brother! i have a history of getting no-no's through customs in some countries north of you, but i wouldn't want to be a problem down there, real or perceived.

thank you all for chiming in, southern brethren!

i don't have an itinerary planned out yet, gotta do some research and see what trouble i can get into the deepest the cheapest first.:thumbup:

i have obligations to visit Christchurch, Sydney and Melbourne, so this might have to be a three-monther walkabout or so. - especially since i want to go bush as much as possible.

i don't want to rush about, just want to blend in as much as possible and enjoy good company when it comes. i'd like to have some time to do some composites down there with some mates as well. why bring a speargun when you can make one, right? we should have plenty of fun.

any good wilderness getaway areas that you recommend, relatively-close to Sydney or Melbourne?

and thanks again,

vec

I'm not overly familiar with Melbourne but you're probably going to have to travel north east up towards the foothills of the Snowy Mountains before you'll come across any real bush.

As for Sydney, the best place for bushwalking anywhere near there would be to head west to the Blue Mountains. Plenty of good walking places up in there.

There are plenty of places where you can get way from it all.

Most of the good areas around Melbourne got wiped out in the fires. There's still stuff further out, plus up near Puckapunyal

Guinness Stout is very important

You might have to hunt around to find that. If you like Heineken it would be easy to find - or Tui, Lion Red and Corona (I see that stuff everywhere). There are Irish pubs about - probably the best places to find Guinness.

If you are heading to Christchurch you should try the 5 day hike along the Milford track. Arthur's Pass is also good.

excellent.

thanks, gentlemen.

Blue Mountains, Snowy Mountains and Milford Track and Arthur's Pass are due for a look then.

Vec,

if you need another contact, I live 10 minutes from Sydney Airport, shoot me an email - daniel @ gtl (dot) com (dot) at

I can help with Customs clearance / Quarantine of any foreseeable seized goods, or help with getting around etc.

cheers,
Daniel

Vec c'mon down to sunny Queensland ,we're a friendly bunch of red necks down this way. And good knives and good company are always welcome.

have fun going through NSW customs with knives :) they are grabby if you are not firm handed with your position...they tried to take a Snody fixed blade (carbon fiber and G10 handle) I brought back coming through Sydney in 2007. Just familiarize yourself with the current laws when coming in and catch them out if they try to fabricate a law to pocket one of the knives. I love Brisbane customs, they just don't care about knives for the most part (they check them briefly, and then pass em).

Have a fun trip, blue mountains I have yet to see...despite growing up less then 6 hours from them.

much appreciated, brother!

i will probably send most of the junk ahead of me to a mate or two, and see what happens.

always fun to mark up a box with a friend's name and have it say "do not open until stinkin' ol' vector arrives in three months, contains goodies for (mate's name)" - always fun to do a good wind up... i think it's my turn to get even with a couple old aussie military buddies...hehehe...!

thanks again for the offer, brother.

Not a problem, its a big old world out there and the more mates you have, sometimes the better.

Offers still there if you need to get in touch for whatever reason,as long as you're not trying to go it alone

If for some reason you find yourself going to Canberra, let me know, maybe I'll let you buy me a beer. :)

Aside from that, if you've had anything to do with the military, a trip to the Australian War Memorial is a must. I can spend days in there.

+1 for the War Memorial, especially the museum part. Not much else in Canberra though. If you're going to the Snowies let me know, I'll come with you if that's ok (assuming I can get off school ;))
