kiwis and aussie brethren

beautiful.

of course, consider all offers reciprocated here if you are ever in the San Diego area, i am in Coronado - the house is probably a health hazard, but its cozy and most folks are out walking around anyways - lots to see in San Diego, and it's a good spot to jump into other parts of the country.

can't have too many Aussies in the wolf pack IMHO.

.....

that war memorial sounds outstanding - a lot of folks don't realize how much Japanese ass the Aussie civilians kicked up north while they waited for relief from the regulars in WWII, not to mention all the other stuff NZ'ers and Aussies did. - my kind of people.

Americans need to re-learn that it's okay to have a pair of balls.

thanks again, mates.

Canberra's Cold ( yes with a capital C. It's the wind. I grew up there)
Watch anything with a swedge coming through customs. It seems to be arbitrarily classed as a dagger depending on who you get at the entry point, good luck with that.
If you head up around Brisbane give me a yell I'll see what I can manage.
Without trying to put the wind up you. Google "ten most venomous snakes" and see where they live.
When you coming? Most of Western NSW seems to be under water at the moment.

Ahhh, c'mon you big girl, what's the matter with you, you've been spoiled by living up in that sauna. ;)

He'll be OK down my way, we just have some nice friendly Brown snakes. You crazy buggers are surrounded by Taipans and Death Adders.

Yeah, while the eastern half, (i.e. my place), is in drought.
Dorothea got it right.

G'day Vector001

Whilst your in Sydney, check out the Rocks area (you'll find lots of Guiness on tap there :D)

Let me know if you would like to see links to post (with lots of pics) I've put up of trips to:

(1) World heritage listed Daintree wet tropical rainforest (far Nth Queensland)

(2) Tasmania

(3) Numerous bush camping & fishing trips in the Central Tablelands / Central West of NSW.

If your out here during the NSW school holidays, let me know. If it works out I'm free of family commitments, I'll take you bushwalking & camping for a few days. I promise you won't hear any Banjo's :D

Kind regards
Mick

Talking about customs - in NZ I don't think they are too worried about knives (but don't bring in gravity knives, balisongs, switchblades or push daggers). They opened my package from New Graham Knives and left a note - checked package and removed nothing. If they don't care about a BK9 then there can't be too many knives that phase them.

we've sent a few of our hawks all about Australia, but they haven't been held up yet. i am starting to get a little familiar with the provincial laws, how they differ, how and when they are ignored - i wouldn't call it a level of expertise, more like an "ear" for the tune....

i'll probably trickle in tools honestly, and try to figure out the odds. - we don't mean any harm, if they want to confiscate everything we'll just laugh and set up a hasty forge and make some music of our own on the spot.

always look on the bright side, i reckon.

a Hammer-in is a fine way to get a party rolling, at least in the Northern Hemisphere...:thumbup:

'appreciated.

i'm pretty use to dangerous snakes and no second chances.

i kinda like 'em - they keep the meddlers out of your playground.

we have a rattlesnake here that carries hemotoxin and neurotoxin, i've had sea snakes in my hair, i had a little nameless sand cobra appear in a hole i was living in once ....lots of fun - i am sure the Aussie snakes are all tough customers, but they can only kill me once just like the others, is how i look at it... that and only the Good die young, so i am safe, mate....

i usually only get concerned about snakes when city folks are around - i don't want any of those innocent pit vipers to get bit by a lawyer....

i'll definitely give the salties a bit of respect....

When you coming? Most of Western NSW seems to be under water at the moment.

i'll probably give it 6 to 18 months - that should give it time to heal up a bit from the fires and everything else - it oughtta be beautiful in a lot of places.

i'm always lucky - it's an obnoxious trait my friends make use of - good in a gunfight - hehehe....! - so maybe the weather will hold.

i just had a close buddy go down to NZ a year or so ago with an assortment of blades - the Customs guys pulled out a big dive knife and asked what he was going to do with it.

"diving," he says with a smile and raised eyebrows.

"great. let's go" ...and i guess he wound up diving in a great spot with the blokes from Customs!

pretty classic, i thought.

it's amazing where ya can wind up for the good when you aren't antagonistic or defensive.

one of my wife's friend moved with her kiwi hubby to Auckland from the US and took notice of his stag handled bowie he brought back for hunting...quarantined it for 2 weeks and got a bill, so be aware of the restrictions with quarantines.

Gaijinoz, Sauna? no that would be the fifteen yrs I spent in Townsville, and every second Christmas in Cairns. Cairns is so humid you need a face mask and snorkel to go outside and check the mail.
Canberra can be beautiful, but being outside when that wind comes up will knock the fun right out of it.
National Museum didn't blow my hair back.
But definitely put at least one full day aside for the AWM I just finished reading "The Steel Cat" About HMAS Brisbane who's bridge and forward gun mount are part of the Post 1945 display. ( Dad was part of the consigning crew that brought HMAS Brisbane back from the states when she was brought)
I dunno I guess if you have limited time pick one area and spend some time if you have a couple months hire( or buy) a camper van and travel. Stay on the road and cruise the little towns and National parks.

Shrine of Remembrance in Melbourne is great, even if you go to the AWM in Canberra. Try and be in Aus for ANZAC day, 25th of April, definitly worth while!

G'day Vector

Generally speaking, the diving is probably better in Australia than NZ if you are into seeing coral and colored fish. I have never SCUBA dived, but I've done a lot of snorkelling at the south end of Western Australia and around New Zealand's Marlborough sounds. The fish life and clarity of water was much better in W.A.

My family and I ate heaps of fish when in Aussie. Never fished from a boat, just caught heaps from the shore using simple handlines.... and I speared a lot of them using a simple rubber-powered Hawaian sling - or 'gidgee' as the Aussies called it.

Oddly enough, for a kiwi bloke, I don't drink beer and I don't follow the rugby. In fact I don't know the rules and I couldn't even name one member of the current All Black team. So I'm not much use to you regarding those topics.

Hog hunting. Well a fair bit of that is done in Aussie and NZ. If I were travelling around I'd rather go out hunting with a local than pay for a guide. I'd be surprised if you couldn't make a decent hunting contact at a country pub as you were travelling around. You could possibly ask around at gun shops.... or anywhere. Most people should know somebody that goes hunting.

Chasing after a hog using dogs is an experience you are likely to remember.

I live in Nelson (north end of the South Island). We are moving out of our house soon, so I can't give you any definite contact details. Besides we are heckuva busy with our business. But if you are going to be in the area perhaps you could send me a private message at this forum so I could at least have a chat about what you hope to do.

Have a great trip.... Coote.

thanks, brother.

yeah, i've done a little hog hunting with knives and dogs, mostly its just a way to meet good buddies fast. something about spilling blood together makes us tight. sitting and listening in the woods is always good wherever you are too....

i will definitely give you a heads-up when the plan comes together more - i appreciate all of your help, you guys have really been great here.

you've no idea how good it is to hear a kiwi say aus is nicer(in some parts) than NZ.
My mums a new zealander and you cant take her for a road trip without her complaining about the australian bush :D
having said that, and having travelled milford sound in a kayak, fished the bay of islands, lake taupo and rotorua, it is a freaking beautiful place

I don't recall coote saying that the Aussie bush didn't suck! ;)

Well FTO_Dude, I guess things are seldom 'black' or 'white' or 'totally better' in absolute terms.... just different. There are some wonderful aspects to both countries.

I was particularly fascinated with the reptiles.... and it was a blast to see your birds and marsupials.

And you Aussies certainly do 'wide open spaces' better than us.

I lived in Albany for around a year. I loved the huge granite formations and the coast.

Gotta say though, that us Kiwis are generally better sportsmen, are more intelligent, and better looking :D Nah.... just joking.... except for the bit about us being better looking.

I really enjoyed the Aussie humor too. I'd only been working in my new job over there a week or two before the Kiwi jokes started.... and they were pretty danged funny. I like the Aussie irreverence. And your Aussie films are generally excellent.

i've actually been to NZ and Tasmania, but only for a couple days each time - military stuff.

i always felt like i was meeting old family - my people are from Wyoming and my grandfather travelled to both your countries on business as a cattleman evidently. makes ya wonder.

where i live is pretty great too, with lots to do - it's just nice to go someplace different that feels like home, if that makes any kind of sense.

my neighbor down the street spends half the year in Oz.

i can't let that stand.
