Ran across this knife, Kislyar, and never heard of it. Is it any good ? Would you send this to somone serving in the middle east ? All I know is that its made in russia. Thanks for any input.

I hear Vlad Putin gives 'em away as gifts to foreign dignitaries. They must have something going for them.

I had a decorated fixed blade with lion etch. It was very well made and much lighter than you would first think just based on looks. Go for it.

Id love to have one of their damascus author knives. Honestly if putin uses one then Im at least convinced to give it a shot, that guy may want to take over the world but if you see the pictures of him on their site he is HARDCORE.

Never handled one, but I like the looks of this model so much, its my PC's wallpaper. There are 4" to 6" models. If I understand it correctly, the steel is said to be similar to D2 -

The steel can be either X12MF (Russian equivalent of D2) or the regular stainless (close to 440C). Decent heat-treatment in both cases.

Either wooden (walnut) or plastic handle.

Leather sheath, but not the best quality and not very practical.

I have a 5" version in D2 and it prooved to be a decent all-around hunting knife.

P.S. "Sterkh" means a "white crane" in Russian.

Spasiba alexsar!

Incidentally, the rate of Russian tourists are increasing here in my country, some even come to learn FMA (Filipino martial arts).

The Putin knife is called "Kuniza", although everybody now calls it "Putin's knife". Here it is, Damascus with Karelian Birch handle. It is made in the Petersburg factory.

Here is the website of the Petersburg branch that makes the customs.

Although they provide an order form - forget about ordering direct, shipping knives across borders is an offense. I tried myself and learned that the hard way. You need a dealer from whom to order.

They look like nice knives, I was interested in getting one but where can you order them from here in the U.S.?

I have a dv2, Voron and a Orlan with round grip. I would rate Kizlyar very highly considering their cost. They are well built and really take a pounding. My Orlan is used daily and I carry it with me whenever I am working - it is such a usefull tool. I reground the olan to 15 degrees with a 18-20 degree microbevel and it holds this edge without a problem.

Now comparison....
The pheonix is a tougher knife but the DV2 is no slouch either and doubt that you would break either under extreme conditions. The pheonix is more of a sticking knife (pig hunting) where as the DV2 is more of a utility type knife meaning it is better for cutting branches/trees etc. The DV2 is very well balanced and feels great in the hand considering its size. I put a movie up on youtube showing my DV2 http://au.youtube.com/watch?v=AYZe8y3pon0 . I only quickly made this movie but it gives you a good impression on what the knife looks like.

The only disadvantage of the dv2 IMO is the coating on the blade. It is shiny and looks as if it would mark with heavy use (because the finish is glossy). But aside from that a great looking well balanced knife.

When i buy knives i use them. I have quite a few knives and have used them all. Kizlyar knives are up there with my best knives but then again i don't own a busse (yet).

For the money I doubt you will be disappointed.

Hope this helps
