Klingspor Belts

One other thing, the Norax belts have a bit of cushion to them, the Trizact's don't

This is important, and one of the first things I noticed. My platen is plenty flat still so it'll probably not be an issue but I do like the "suspension" the Norax provides...

Tracy which grits do you use in your progression? I've been stopping at 30X then working an 800 grit cork belt before polishing on the buffer. I recently got some 22Xs to see if taking it higher helps. I hadn't thought of going further because I'm so cheap. But if it makes for better grind lines (and saves valuable part-timer time) I'm all for it.

I also decided to do a Trizact-to-Norax test head up to see if I can determine which is better for finishing steel. Haven't done that yet so I'm interested in hearing anyone else's experience or opinions on this. They're about the same price at Tru Grit but I can get Trizact locally slightly less expensive.

I'm looking forward to trying the felt belt...
I go 100x, 60x,30x,16x and 5x. Then a quick buff with K&G green chrome. I buf maybe a minute or two at most. Any time I skip a grit to try and save time, I end up having to go back two steps. Lot's of wasted time.

I hate Trizacts. They cut you in a split second, deep too. They leave bump marks at the seam so you keep trying to smear that out. Norax doesn't do that. They do wear forever and I use them on non-critical items on the wheel, never the platen due to the obnoxious bump. Norax crushes Trizact in finish and ease of use.

My latest order of Norzac's came in from True Grit as Tri-helical (little pyramids) instead of the diagnol lines like I bought some time ago. The 5x in the Tri-h doesn't seem to mirror up as good as the other ones at least initially. When they get some wear, they polish a little better.

based on what some of you guys have suggested, I just placed an order for 3-M belts in 40 grit...

I will let you know how I like them when they get here.

Oh by the way, I sure love the way this Pop guy keeps up with my order, he had my belts on the way here via UPS the next morning.

What J. said. I go thru alot of belts and all of them for the last decade have came from James.
He also has some great handle bolt sets and folder pivot bolts.

Thanks Tracy. I spent my first couple hours with the Trizact and the splice bump is indeed "obnoxious." We'll see how they do on the wheel, but I'm back to Norax for most of my work. And I guess I need to add some steps. I've been doing most of that with the palm sander; I'd sure like to get it done on the machine.

I think I'll give Pops a shot too. Thanks for the URL Mike.

Haven't ried em yet. I'll probably get around to them this weekend. I've got a couple more to finish and then a couple forging days before then.

Dave, give Pop's a call. He often has things not in his catalog or on the site.

Here he is Dan. Gettin' big huh?

hmmm...

I didn't see Norax on Pop's website - does he stock them and I just need to call?

Dave, Tru Grit carries them also, if Pop's doesn't have them.

Tracy,

I'm really jealous of you guys that can use belts for finishing work. After 220 I can't seem to get anything to work, except 3m microfinish belts, but they leave a nasty uneven finish.

I have a full set of Trizac and Norax belts. Yup the Norax cut better, and a fresh X65 will take out 220 scratches, but beyond that almost nothing works (Flat grind S30V is my boogie man).

BTW the new 3M 'gator' belts are great, I'm lovin' 'em. I have 80 thru 320 grit. I'm probably going to stop using everything else because these new ones last soooo darned long.

Hey Steve, you think those new belts last longer than the 967/977's or Norton Hoggers? I picked up some at Batson's from Bader and am looking forward to trying them....man if they are a longer lasting belt that is really going to be fantastic given their lower cost! :)

You know, Darren, I'm not sure about the bigger grit stuff. They might or might not. I haven't really pushed the 80 grit to the limit (actually I think it has A300 on the belt - that sure looks funny).

However, the 100 mircon (about 180 grit?) sure is holding up.

Steve

PS Because the abrasive is on there so thick, I wonder if I should get a belt dresser. Just might put the edge back on the grit.

Steve,

S30V is every one's boogy man, especially flat grind. It takes me twice as long doing an S30V vs ATS34 when going smaller than 220 grit. I can get a milky looking mirror on them but not a black mirror. I just get tired of burning my fingers on the same blade over and over I guess and eventually give up.

I really want to try out those 3m gater belts, is any one selling them yet?

Tracy,

I got mine from Tru-Grit. I don't know if they have any in stock today. But give them a ring. I know they ordered a bunch.
