KME Sharpener for small blades

Has anyone here used a kme sharpening system with traditional knives. I was wondering if the system will work with small blades like the secondary blades on a stockman. Thanks in advance for your replies.

It should be fine if you get a KME and ask Ron for a set of his new longer jaws witch makes sharpening smaller blades much easier.

You can find the new 'small & traditional' jaws on the KME website (not sure if I'm allowed to link to it??):

Set 2: KME Pen Knife Pro Jaws

thanks for the heads up. I knew Ron was going to release smaller jaws, but did not know he had done so yet. Pair on the way.

I believe links to manufacturer's sites are okay. Here they are: http://kmesharp.com/geiiinja.html. I need to get a set of these asap. Thanks for the info, banksy.

I'll still probably just freehand my smaller blades, but this is the selling point for me: "Saber grinds, full flat grinds, and even full hollow ground blades are held securely with no need to tape or shim the blades."

One other thing I forgot to mention was there is a trick to Sharpening Japanese Chef knives with the KME if you want to get down to 10 degree's even if you have the new jaws, you need to flip the part the hold the bearing that the guide rod runs in so it is facing the bottom not the top,and there is another new part Ron has made as well it's a new spacer that goes on the shaft to keep the black wing nut back farther so the stone won't hit it when trying to sharpen at lower angles,it is 3/4 instead of 1/2 long.

Just thought I give a heads up incase anyone has a Japanese Chef knife and was thinking of using it with the KME,I could not find the Spacer on his sight but he told me over the phone he has them and was shipping one.

The triple ear wing nut at 1/2" tall, does not give much leverage to get the jaws tight.

If you have a tiny blade, the jaws will be in the way anything below 12, or so. .

I think maybe your not understanding what I was trying to say,Ron has made a longer spacer that is 3/4 long instead of 1/2 and it is to move the wing nut back farther witch gives more clearance for the stone.

Excellent. I'm going to make one for mine. Thanks.

I get it. I have the longer spacer, but mine still rubs if I get the angle low. A few washers might help.

So does this mean your order for the new clamps has arrived?

They did. I was able to sharpen a knife, that I could not do with any of my other sharpeners.

I want to do it again, now that my FrankenSharp is almost completed. I just did a rush job on it the first time, to try out the jaws.

They work great! KME does fill a niche no other sharpener quite fills. These new tiny jaws will cement that.

Found this thread and have a question or two! :)

Do the current kits sold have the new Pen jaws or is this a "have to buy" option like the base?

Which is more useful, the diamond or ceramic stone kit?

Thx.

The kits come with the standard jaws. The pen jaws are an optional extra (but well worth it).
Depends what you mean by useful. The diamond stones are a quick way to reprofile, but the finest stone will leave you with very sharp satin finish. If you're looking for mirror, you will need further stones or strops for polishing.

Yeah, I dont care about mirror edges, satin maybe but mainly want just a nice sharp one and repeatability on resharpens. Maybe play with reprofiling at some point.
