Anyone use a KMFS Vantaedge? It has an interesting way to fix the sharpening angle across the blade. Looks like high-quality construction also, with linear bearings. Overkill, or a good idea?

While I like that it actually maintains a consistent angle, the angles themselves seem poorly selected and I don't like that it isn't adjustable on that front. It seems far too limited in application.

I have one.

It's well built, high quality, nice and compact and comes with a great case.

What it doesn't do well, is stropping or sharpening with a very light touch.

You need a specific amount of force to make it "seat" into the set angle while you're sharpening. Basically - as you push down on the stone holder when sharpening, it raises the rear rod to make the angle align with what you've selected. This amount of force it far too much for stropping or for very light and precise burr minimization.

I also would like to have the option of alternative clamps, but it only comes with the one "double" whole milled clamp.

For general and quick sharpening, it does a good job.

I don't know if you have tried the hover spring that KMFS makes and I kind it helps with being able to use a lighter touch when sharpening,I find without the hover spring you need to push down harder on the stone holder to keep the stone flat so that the stone doesn't up on one side and then the edge of the stone is grinding the edge rather then the whole stone.

All I can say is try the hover spring kit because it made a big difference for me.

There’s a thumb hole on the side of the clamp, so you can simply lift the rod with your finger. I also have a multi-angle tool, but I don’t use it.

I’ve sharpened hundreds of knives on the Vantaedge, and with a few exceptions, the 15° and 20° angles have been sufficient.
What I consider essential are the stroke limiters. They’ve saved my sharpening stone from falling off a height many times.

KMFS also sells diamond resin stones, which I think are great for the price.

However, I would definitely buy a metal-bonded coarse Diamond/CBN stone as well, for setting the initial edge angle.
I use the PDT CBN Premium 100/80 (240 grid), which I love.

I picked one up before Christmas from a USA dealer, totally happy with it. I ordered the multi angle adapter a week after I received the Vantaedge unit. I did experience some roll-over of the stone also - the hover spring helps, but I found that making sure the angle head is facing center to start with and allowing it to pivot from center to follow the curves and tips prevents the rollover. Best part is you can take out knife, put it back in, not same position on clamp and it works. I experimented and played with several blades.

The USA dealer has mixed reviews on Blade forums. They do not follow up on emails after the order except to tell you when it ships. The prices changed daily during December. The dealer is from the “Windy City”, but it ships from VA a week later.

Just my experience.
I am totally pleased😎

You won't truly appreciate the Vantaedge sharpening set until you've sharpened something this crazy. A symmetrical edge along the entire length of the blade in a single clamping, without disassembly.

If you don't have the Hover Spring yet I would get that to stop stone roll over that was by far the biggest help me.

Also if you find the included metal base isn't big enough and you don't want to have to clamp it to a table you can get a peace of plywood and some Tee Nuts and drill 4 holes into the plywood and then use a spade bit to make a recess for each Tee Nut and then hammer them in.

I'm going to make a 10x10 or 11x11 plywood base for doing larger kitchen knives that I don't want to hold while sharpening.
