Hello,

I just got my new KMG in yesterday! Schweeeet!!!! Merry Christmas to me!! Anyway.... I live in a very humid climate and going out to the shop this morning I was already noticing some surface spots of rust forming on the metal. little pinhead splotches on the various plate edges.:barf: O.k., I gotta clear coat it..... Question is, are there areas I don't want to paint, probably not the shafts I'm thinking, and of course anything aluminum doesn't need it? If I clearcoat the platen will heat build up and just end up smoking the paint. I haven't run it yet so I have no, zero, nada experience with what gets hot and what doesn't. I am thinking of disassembling as much as possible, painting the parts and puting her back together.

Input from the guys who have painted a KMG before would be appreciated.

Thanks.

Merry Christmas to everyone!

I did both the same way, I stripped the hardware off and the idler wheel, and then put newspaper/masking tape over the bearings and drive wheel. Then I painted everything, including the shaft. If you were to take the drive wheel off, then you would just have to mask where the wheel had been anyway.

I painted the tooling arms... just the arms, so I took the hardware off of them as well.

I've got the baseplate on both of mine, and I painted them separately with a different color.

I left mine alone in Miami for a couple of years and everything rusted except for the platen. I dont think you need to worry about it. I am going to clean it up one day and coat it too... one day.

I personally think the KMG should already come painted but if not I cant imagine leaving it bare metal. Ive seen some after a couple years and they look terribly rusty but still work like new.

I painted every thing but the tooling arms and the attachments, every thing else i painted
the tooling arms allready fits so close i though it would ball up with the paint on it and now all the dust, and not slide easy.

Since you asked about clearcoat...
(I like the bare metal finish too.)

I like boiled linseed oil. It gives a clear metal finish without building up thickness that will flake off.

I have seen some people use silicone (think automotive tire and vinyl coating)
but after that it is impossible to paint.

I cleaned mine real well with mineral spirits to remove the oils, taped off what I didn't want painted(table face, knobs, wheels) put on a coat of 2K primer and put a coat of automobile paint on it.
Don't forget the pinstripes!!!! bruce/birdog

Thanks for posting a picture... I miss seeing what the KMG used to look like. I agree, I paid full price for the KMG and it comes in with a sign that says "Watch me Rust!". However, all the parts that matter never rust like the wheels, bearings, and platen... and the KMG was worth every penny... just wish it had alittle more protection.

Thanks for the feedback! I went to Lowe's and got the rustoleum clearcoat today. If I could just get a sunny / dry day I could git er done! Nothing but rain and fog here.
