KMG Clone Questions ?

I used a 30 pound sealed gas spring for mine and it works great. 30 pounds seams about right.

As many clones as their are in existence in the knife making community, no one has a recommendation on what spring they used on their clone!
Guys I am not going to hold you responsible for the success or failure of this spring I am just looking for recommendations on what you used on your clone!

Where did you get your spring from?

What spring was it?

Are you having any problems that you feel may be attributed to the tension of the spring, (not enough tension, too much tension)?

Maybe I am overthinking this part of the project but, I just don't want to end up with a tensioner spring on my clone, which creates too much tension or one that is not enough tension both sound like a recipe for improper functioning of the grinder!:)

I just bought a big door spring at the big box store and kept cutting it down until the belt tracked without vibration. Cost was maybe $4 and a little time of trial and error.

Thanks! Is there an online link to the spring with which you are referring too?
I don't think we have a "Big Box Store" around here but, at least maybe I could see what you are refering too, that you started out with!

Do you happen to know the size of the wire the spring is made of, diameter of the spring, length you ended with after cutting! Sorry if I am being a PITA!

I used one from McMaster Carr. I didn't (and still don't) think the selection was that critical; I picked one that was 1" OD x 0.120" wire, 3 or 3.5" long. Standard grade, not a die spring.

I made my spring-mount adjustable. I think some (of the earlier?) KMGs had this feature. I can adjust the no-load height of the spring. A steel post protrudes from the top of the KMG receiver. I made a collar with a set-screw that slides over the post. The spring rides on the collar. You adjust by loosening the set screw and sliding the collar to a new position.

I have an extra free spring if you pay shipping.

Thanks for the offer patriqq  but I found a spring at one of the local builders supply store that I think will work. Thanks for the adjustable idea. I hadn't thought of that. It won't be hard to do and could save my bacon if I cut too much from the spring!
