Seriously though if you want to get to it and not screw around. Just put the motor on the same side as the other wheels and mount the drive wheel to it. Bolt it to the table and get your rotation going in the right direction and you are set.

I would expect someone to have alignment and tracking problems with this idea. The motor wouldn't be solidly connected to the frame of the grinder and might not stay in alignment.
 
If it can be done with a shaft and pillow blocks it can be done with the motor.

Did you see the guys big grinder with wooden wheels and direct drive with the motor posted earlier? It ran like a champ!
 
Im currently reading up on my vfd and checking out the different settings and adjustments that might need to be made
