Hey guys, Me and Sam Salvati were grinding on some new Blaze 24-grit belts on the KMG...and Sam thought this would be a "Kodak Moment".:D (Insert various captions as you see fit.)
"Man...this forged A2 is some tough stuff."
"Is my house going to burn down with all this fire?"
"Is this Blaze "gravel road" going to suck me into KMG oblivion?"

All kidding aside, my 2-HP Variable KMG made pretty short work of this forged A2.

P.S. The "Masked Maker" in the photos is Li'l 'Ol me.

Nice!!! Lookin good bro!

Holy Smokes!! Do you guys really use the small wheel attachment this agressively? The blue belt tells me that it's probably a Klingspor X weight..maybe 60-80 grit.....and from the volume of sparks..it looks like the belt speed is moving along briskly.

I've always considered the small wheel attachment to be a delicate tool/process....using J-weights for smoothness and slow speeds with few sparks.

Please tell me that the small wheel photo is normal!!! I would love to hear that you guys do this all the time and that the tool is really tougher than I imagined.

Nice pics Mitch!! Thanks for posting. So obviously you're up and running. How does 2 Horsepower feel? Are you wishing you had more?

Yeah! That was another thing I was afraid would happen!:D

Looks like your having a blast with the new toy!!

I would get a cotton or non flammable jacket to wear while grinding.A guy in my local was wearing a flannel lined with that plastic quilt while welding and got burned pretty bad.The worst part was the plastic sticks right to you :barf:

Rob, You are dead right; it is a Klingspor 60-grit. I'm not using the small wheel as aggressively as it may first appear. Forged A2, although not technically "hardened" at this point, is darn hard...you can't drill through it, no way....maybe with a waterjet, then, maybe. Anyways, the A2 throws a lot of sparks after it's forged. I normally use the small wheel at very, very low speeds with other steels.
The 3-HP? If I was making an initial purchase, I would definitely get the 3- HP.
However, I figure the new upgrade to be about another Grand....so we'll have to see. With good quality, fresh belts, the 2-HP is doing pretty darn fine!
Thanks again for the great customer service.

Thanks for the safety tip, Joe. It's just my luck that something completely avoidable like that would happen to me.:grumpy:

If you run that little wheel very fast, you'll burn up the bearings. I usually run my 1.5 hp at 20%. I use it for finger choils and other small radius areas.

Joe that was the first thing I thought when I saw the photo as well... I can just see that quilted jacket catching fire and the nylon melting and gumming up the zipper! At that point you better hope the blade your grindin is already sharp:eek:

FWIW I wear an old leather welding coat when grinding. Keeps my belly from burning up, keeps me warm in the winter, and most importanltly keeps metal shavings out of the washer and dryer, which for some reasin my wife REALLY HATES:o Blows right off with the air compressor

Thanks for sharin the photos Mitch. Looks like your havin a blast!

Rob, I've been using mine pretty agressively. It handles that OK. I worry about the belt tracking into the side during startup though.

Thanks, John. I certainly don't want that to happen....I love that little 1/2" wheel.

You're most welcome, Matt. I am having a blast...that KMG is pure sweetness.

Yeah, that half inch wheel is very critical. I have mine on a double billy roll set up on my B-III. I love saying "double billy roll". Hopefully I've be getting one of Rob's rotary platens for it soon.

John, Please let me know how you like the rotary platen... let me know if there's a big difference with it. Thanks

Hey Mitch great pictures! Rob that 2HP is POWERFUL, I cannot imagine needing more, cannot wait to be able to get the 2HP variable speed upgrade.

I use my small wheel alot ont the fast speed and not alot of pressure. Normally 60 grit on up and I cut close to my profile to limit the material I need to eliminate.
