After much jabber jawing, and a good bit of procrastination I finally ordered a proper knife grinder. A KMG with 10" wheel, flat platen, and a small wheel.

Can anyone tell me what the footprint of the machine is? Do the tool arms extend behind the machine for different attachments? I am clearing some drywall this weekend to make a place for it.

What height do you find works best for the machine mentioned. Thank you for your time.

Hello Ron,

I sold my KMG about two years back, I suggest that you wait till it arrives before you build anything for it. Height will depend on if you stand or sit, I sit. Also to some degree on if you Hollow, Flat grind or both?

Yes the tool arms do extend and more so the bigger the wheel you are using and possibly the height as well for the 14" wheel.

Have you done any grinding yet?

Are you comfortable standing or do you want to sit? most that stand want it at about locked Elbow height.

The chassis footprint is 8" x 18" inches. The tool arms do not extend behind the chassis for any of the attachments, but you'll need clearance for belt changes and such. I placed mine flush with the front of my bench. My benches are 24" in depth and 34" in height from the floor. I'm 6' 1" for reference.

Mine has been modified a little bit but the base of it is right at 18" long by almost 8" wide. As for the tool arms, the small wheel attachment comes out further than the wheel and even more so than with a platen attached.
I would def. agree with Laurence and wait until it gets to you. Check out an air shock upgrade for the tensioning/tracking arm. Easy and quick upgrade. Feel free to message me if there's anything I can help you with.

I will wait then.

-everything sticks out the front.
-approx. 8 x 18, without the motor next to it.
-look into the spring tention upgrade.

Noted.

Lawrence,
No I have never used a proper grinder. Everything I have done was freehand disk grinder, then a 21" sander once, and a little work on my 16" disk sander, with a ton of hand sanding to complete those attempts. This will be a big efficiency upgrade I hope.

I will probably grind standing. I don't want my knees anywhere under the machine.

Edit;
Thank you, all.

Ron,
While sitting my knees are protect being under the table but I had a large heavy Leather Apron made for me to protect the family jewels and arteries in my legs from flying pointy objects.;)

I suggest you do like wise standing or sitting at a grinder.
