How much differance between the 1.5 and 2hp three phase motors. Cost is close but I would not have to wire the garage for 220 with the 1.5. Opinion's needed.

How important is the base plate to the set up of the grinder. It is much easier than just bolting it to the plywood bench.

I am getting ready to pull the trigger and am just figuring out the details.

You can get by and do almost everything you need to do with a 1.5hp motor; however when you start grinding larger knives, or if you bear down hard on the grinder, the lesser hp is going to show and you'll start to bog the grinder. Most people that I've talked to would recommend going as big as you can afford. As you stated, the price difference isn't that great. It also shouldn't cost that much to get a 220 outlet run in your garage as your breaker box probably already has it coming in, and most of the time, all the electrician has to do is run an outlet.

The base plate just makes things easier to mount solidly in a neat arrangement. However, it also adds mass to the machine since it is solidly bolted to the grinder. This makes a more stable and smoother running grinder in the long run. If you had to choose between base plate and motor size, I would pick the bigger motor over the base plate if it was me.

Congrat's. Can't wait to see what you will do with a great grinder! Your knives are super.

Congrats! The KMG is what I learned, great machine. It's going to suck to step down to a Delta 1x42, but I'll manage.

Hey, thanks! I appreciate the compliment, and I'm also looking forward to delegating that old Grizzly to grunt work only. :)
