KMG Grinder recommendation

Hey guys,

I have been looking into getting a KMG grinder here soon. I'm torn between the 3 speed and variable speed grinder. There is about a $600(package price) difference between the two (KMG8-VS :thumbdn: KMG-PL). Is the $600 extra worth it or will the 3 speed be sufficient? I'm currently working with a 2X48 Kalamazoo so the KMG will be a huge upgrade either way I go. Thanks!

Get the variable speed! ! It cost me plus of 700 to change my Bader3. Buy it and don't look back.

I worked with the three speed pulley system for about a year. Aside from the slight inconvenience of moving the belt to different pulleys, I was mostly content with the set-up.

Of course the variable speed set-up is most desirable and Jesse Latham's comment about the additional cost to convert it from pulley to variable speed is something to be considered.

If you can figure out a way to pay the extra cost now, you won't be disappointed.

I have had the three speed kmg for five years. I ended up putting together another grinder last summer and was able to find a motor cheap and already had a vfd set up for a surface grinder. I set the other machine up with a 3hp 3400rmp motor with a 6 inch drive wheel. It is awesome for really hogging or going really slow during final grinding, but that being said, I still use the kmg 80% of the time and it is more than adequate for me.

I would probably pick up a chassis package (everything less motor and VFD) and then purchase a motor on the auction site and a VFD on wholesale electric motors. Doing this you can get your VS package for the price of a pulley system.

Just buy the package from KMG. After all the running around most likely ending up with a low quality VFD your not going to be saving much. I have had both when I purchased my current grinder I opted for the full package. Buy once cry once.

If you go the route I suggested, get a KBAC 27d VFD...about $380 with Fwd/rvrse and line on/off switch, I should have specified as I was not talking about anything less. It will take some looking but you can get a great motor for under $150 to your door. I bought a couple brand new Baldor TEFC's for well under that. If you have the time to search the auction site and keep an eye out for what you need you can save some $. If you need one right now or dont want to mess with it then that is a different story.

Thanks guys! Looks like I will go with the variable speed KMG package. Thanks for all the info and suggestions!
