I am going to get a 2HP KMG and VFD. At what height do most folks mount these grinders? I'm average height, about 6'1". I will build a stand for the grinder. What is the physical size of the grinder? I can't find any dimensions on the website and am trying to figure out where to put it in the shop.

Thanks in advance for any help.

interested also. I have a grinder coming as well, and I was going to build a work station for it too. I'm 5'7" and was wondering the same. I thought I read somewhere that you wanted the work at belt buckle level?

Basically people like to work at different heights, so you will have to see what will work best for you. I personally like to stand with my arms bent at 90 degrees with my elbows locked into my sides. The blade is almost resting against my stomach when I'm grinding. I found that the closer you can hold the blade to your body, the less wobbly it will be when your grinding. That being said, I am 6' and I think my workbench is 36 inches. With the kmg on it, it is a little taller than I'd like, but I make do.

You can find the area it occupies from the kmg website by looking at the base plate dimensions

I would wait until you have it yourself and try it at different heights with blocks before committing to a workbench height.

I would grind with it first, than build a table. I tend to grind a bit higher than most, typically between my sternum and belly button. Everyone seems to have an ideal height for different things, and nothing about it seems typical in nature. If your building a do it all solid table for other work as well, I would build to suit so it is comfortable with all different types of work intended. You can always shim the grinder up, but would be difficult doing every other process with a table high up in the air.

With a herniated disc in the back I like to change from sitting to standing quite a bit, so I bought a motorized adjustable drafting table(had a thread on it when I got it), but not everyone is going to have that availability or necessity. Some guys use a bar stool for this type of thing but I actively try to keep proper posture while working and can't do that with my feet dangling and hangin on to whichever object is closest to them.

My .02 cents,
Justin

Apparently me and the count had the same idea simultaniously, always get a kick out of that!

Set it so that u grind right in front of your beer belly.

If you are building a stand, make it adjustable for height. Just as an FYI a 'typical' shop counter height is 34" from the floor to the top of the counter surface. Of course this is highly variable, and when I was in the homebuilding industry, typical kitchen countertop height was 36"--just to let you know that 'typical' is very vague--so in concert with what others have posted, I would want the ability to adjust a little if I could, and would do so after working on my grinder a little.

Good luck--let us know what you come up with!

Hands below the elbows, being able to look straight down at the center line works for me. Good Luck.

Thanks for the info. I found a YouTube video and one fellow built an 18" wide by 24" deep stand for his KMG. It was a bit hard for me to figure out the scale of the unit from the pictures. I looked and looked and can't find anywhere that lists the size of the base plate.

It wasnt my stand was it? I built a table specifically for my KMG, the top is 18x24 it's positioned a bit higher than a normal table or bench, so that I grind at about the height of my sternum.

I think you have to decide if you want to stand or sit at your grinder. I am 6'3" tall and I decided that I wanted to sit at my KMG. I bought a stand that would fit the dimensions of the KMG baseplate and then adjusted the stand to the maximum height of 29". Then I bought a sturdy wooden chair at a garage sale and sat down and decided the chair was too low so I made a base of 4x4 lumber and put four pieces of one by 6 around the base to keep the chair "corralled" so it wouldn't move. Lastly I bought some very cheap stadium seat pads in a plastic bag and tied them to the chair with the plastic bag intact and have been using it for 5 years now. The seat bottom is 22 inches. I am suggesting you try blocking up a temporary stand until you know the height you feel comfortable with. I mainly use a 2x2 tool rest to steady whatever grind I'm doing. An adjustable stand is nice if you can find one or have a lot of welding talent. If you grind standing up get someone to measure from your hands to the floor with your arms locked into your sides and make the center of your grinding wheel the same height. I have two grinders. One is for standing and one is for sitting. I have a preference for sitting...just my opinion again. Larry
