ok yet another question from me about horizontal grinders. the kmg v/s hor disc grnder states it runs at 1725rpm. Does anyone think this is to slow for a top speed. if so then why. someone in a previous thread said id want one that rotates up to 3500rpm.In my thinking Rob wouldnt be selling something that wouldnt work to its fullest potential. any advice on rpm on a horizontal 9" grinder??--thanks-marekz

1750 RPM is plenty fast for a horizontal disc grinder.

I am using a 1750 RPM motor with a set of step down pullies 1.5" on the motor and 6" on the Disc shaft so I am getting around 440 RPMs on the disc.

I use the disc for cleaning up tappered tangs and I wouldn't want it moving a whole lot faster.

Take care

I built my own first with a 3600 RPM motor. No dang good at all. Way too fast. Then I found an 1175 rpm motor new on Ebay. What a nice setup! Plenty fast for anything I do, and much safer! Variable speed would be nice, but kinda pricey. I have less than $150 in mine.

Marek-

I prefer vertical, but either way... 1725 is plenty fast IMHO. The only time I crank the speed up on mine is if I'm running the 120 or 220x ceramic discs. The abrasive on standard sheets of paper will just get sheared off if going too fast.

MOST of the time my variable disc is turned down REAL SLOW. :)

I've always found slow works best on a horizontal disk, also really recommend a foot switch so you don't have to remove a hand from the work piece to power up and down. That's when I always really jacked a knife up on a disk.
