does anyone have an opinion on using the new horizontal grinder from beumont metal works as a surface grinder to get flat surfaces between welds in damascus welding? do you think it would work? is there enough belt area exposed to get a flat surface if my billets end up being 1-2 " wide?

just curious and a little informatinanally deprived. (actually i dread the idea of trying to move a surface grinder into my workspace and could easily get this thing in)

thanks

It is a wonderful grinder but I do'nt believe what you propose would work as well as just using a flat platten on a regular kmg.

A 4 1/2" right angle grinder, with a 6 inch grinding disc on it, will cut the scale in a hurry. I finish the billet surface with a 6 inch wire brush on the same grinder. It will clean anything off the surface that the grinding disc didn't remove.

Keeping the scale to a minimum, by scraping the surface, of the billet, after the final forge heat, helps to make the cleanup easier, after it cools.

Hi Scott! No, the EF 48 is not the machine for that job. Flattening/leveling billets involves a large amount of surface area pressed against the platen. In terms of creating friction, this is the worst case scenerio and really requires a lot of horse power. The EF-48 is 1hp machine and was design for delicate edge finishing. For your billets, I would use the KMG with the platen attachment and 2hp, a coarse belt and lots of belt speed.

I hope this make sense...thanks for the consideration.

Rob,
I'm loving my KMG and see a horizontal in the future. Just curious if you sell the framework without motor and drive ? I didn't see that as an option on your website.

Thanks Josh
